I'm very happy for both sides. JG probably could have signed a bridge deal for 2-4 years at a lesser amount and gotten more after that (assuming that he'd sign a long term contract eating up more UFA years) but this satisfies both sides. It's very good value for the Flames now and he'll still be very young when he needs a new contract. He cashes in now, giving up a bit in the last few years of the deal but likely gets more in his next deal than he would have in the second deal if he'd signed a bridge contract.
Seems like a win win scenario. BTW, I personally think he resigns with the Flames after this deal is over and they get better value to dollars spend both now and later than they would have with signing him to a bridge deal. JG gets more money earlier than just signing a bridge deal and gets some protection against injuries/falling off.
Iove this deal for both sides. As much as I'd love Philly to get him, glad he's staying in Calgary, fans of every team need big marketing stars to root for and promote/be the face of the franchise. So happy he's staying where he is
