This deal only covers one UFA year. If it was an eight year deal damn right it woulda been 8m AAV.

By signing him to 6x6.75, the Flames save 7.5 million over 6 years in comparison to an 8x8. When he becomes a UFA, for those next 2 years, JG would have to make 10.5 million to make as much money as an 8x8.

We will find out how the salary cap looks in 6 years. And if he trends higher he is looking at more then 10.5 possibly

good deal and good for the Flames

Great deal, the bad contracts come off when Bennett and Tkachuk will need new ink.

Flames saved a few bucks here; it's going to help them long term building a winner. The top 3D and two big offensive players are locked up long term.

i can't help but think that what would really help them build a winner long-term is an extra million or so (1.3% of the salary cap) for 2 more ufa years, especially since we're paying guys like brouwer 4.5 mil. but there's no way to know what it would have taken to get gaudreau to sign for 8 years, and 6 years is a long time too.

Rediculous, six years is long term, not the longest of eight but it's still a long-term investment! in six years there will be a new CBA and who knows, possibly even new management in Calgary.

Lets be honest this is very likely to happen lol but probably a new coach first :sarcasm:

I guess both sides got what they wanted. Management got the AAV for cap reasons they wanted, JG's contract ends at a perfect time to renegotiate a whopper of a deal.

Win win for both sides with a bit of concession from each side.

Excellent stuff. :)

"He was kinda driving us crazy, because he just wanted to get out there and play,'' said his mom, Jane. "It's bittersweet because my younger son Matty, who plays at Boston College, left at the end of August and John went to the World Cup.

"It was kind of an added advantage that he got to come home. We thought it would only be for a couple of days until they ironed out the differences.

"It's good. He'll be fine. He's just anxious to get back and get playing. He loves Calgary. That's all he kept saying. 'I love Calgary. I love the fans there. I love my teammates. I just want to get back to that.'

"He wanted to be there with his teammates."

Yep, definitely sounds like a guy who's gonna bolt first chance. If anything, it sounds like Gross was being greedy.

I think this works fine for both sides. For the Flames, $6.75 is a nice cap hit, and they've got him locked up for awhile. For Gaudreau, it's a decent contract for now, and he's set up perfectly for a MOSTER UFA deal. He'll be 28 when he hits the UFA market, likely still in his prime, that's when teams throw insane money at you (in terms of term and AAV). At 30, he's more likely to have started his decline, and would possibly never get that one really unreal UFA contact.

Edmonton signed a better player in Taylor Hall to a 6x6 contract. Too bad they traded him for a capable but not as valuable defenceman.

Taylor Hall's first two seasons, 42 and 53 points, third season had 50 in 45.

Johnny Hockey's first two seasons, 64 and 78 points.

Hall had one good year, he didn't deserve to be paid anymore than 6x6.

Also, Gaudreau is a better player than Hall.

I am fine with Gaudreau having 6 years term. Would I have been ecstatic about 8? sure. But that extra ~0.75 million in cap flexibility might be the difference between a cup and no cup in the next six years, especially with the nature of performance bonuses (see 2013-14 Bruins). To my knowledge the Flames were pushing for 6.75 * 7 years but ultimately bent on a year to get Gaudreau to sign. For Gaudreau, the training camp holdout got him potentially more money on year 1 of his next contract, assuming good health.

Yeah Gaudreau is def better than Hall.

IMO the top LW in order are:

Benn
Ovechkin
Gaudreau
Hall
Parise
Pacioretty
Marchand

I wanna see more seasons of Panarin before he enters the conversation.

1) Taylor Hall was signed to a 6x7
2) Hall's agent signed him to that 6x7 based on a much worse sample size (after two years - his third year (his first near PPG) had not even started when he signed the extension. Factoring in cap increases, that basically would have been the equivalent of the Flames signing Gaudreau to 6.75 x 7 right after his rookie season... great if it works out but a disaster if his rookie year were just a fluke. While the Flames lost a year in comparision, they also had a better NHL sample to judge Gaudreau's worth off of rather than gamble on hope and belief. They know they should get good value for this contract whereas the same deal signed a year ago carried extreme risk.
3) Hall was never better. Just more physically mature at a younger age.

This is a f****ng steal of a contract. Jeez. Gaudreau is worth 7.5 million per year AT THE ABSOLUTE LEAST

Yup exactly. 7.5 would have been more then fair, even a good deal. 6.75?? Abso-****ing-lutely stellar. What a deal. Seriously, one of the best deals in the entire NHL :handclap:

Is it too much to ask for the posters who were doubting this to come forward and say they were wrong? Or will they slink back to their own team boards quietly?

I think you've got your answer.

Flames got a nice deal on their marquee player. Johnny will still be able to sign a huge free-agent contract at the end of this one, and protected himself with the 5-team trade clause in the last year, if he wants to finish his career close to home.

I like that he probably left some money on the table, because of his love of the game, his teammates, and the Calgary fans. That might make him a sucker to some. Good on you, Johnny, say I.

Good deal for Flames and lackluster deal for Gaudreau. I wonder why he signed for extra UFA year.

I guess this is going to be an issue next lockout - I think PA will advocate that a 23 year old guy who is top-10 in scoring should have some leverage in contract talks other than sitting out.

Grats Flame fans, even if you didn't get the term you were after (8) the cap hit is outstanding.. I am absolutely shocked the number doesnt start with an 7 (a mid 7 honestly).
