He would be a UFA in 4 seasons

Nope.

He played 1 game in 2013-14 after Boston College, thus burning one year of his ELC.

However, he was not eligible to sign an offer sheet this season because he had only played less than 10 games in 2013-14.

I believe the same reasoning applies to his UFA status.

Really good for the Flames at 6.75 Mill. Thought for sure he would have demanded 7.5.

What an idiot. Should have held out for more. He'd get it.

Yeah what an idiot, just wanting to play with his teammates and not wanting to miss any games, what a dummy, he only got 40 mil, I'm sure he'll be living in poverty shortly after retirement. I'll take take that dummy over the player who only cares about money and will sit out games no problem and put him team in worse position to make the playoffs. Tells me his priorities are hockey, and winning. Money isn't everything.

Thats a steal for Calgary... I hate that UFA´s that are declining badly and probably will not break 50 points gets almost as much as he does. Backes etc.
Great RFA´s should have more leverage when discussing contracts. Why not pay the players for the level they are at right now and not lowball them because they are young and rfa´s. I get thats the way it is and i dont know how i want it to be i just think its dumb as hell that Backes gets 6, Lucic gets 6 etc and Gaudreau gets 6,75. The guy scored almost ppg last season. RNH got 6, Eberle got 6. Gaudreau should get a good amount more than what they got imo.
Steal for Flames and Gaudreau has enough money for one and two dinners every night so its not like i feel bad for him, i just dont like they way so many ufa´s get top dollar when they arent close to the players some rfa´s are. I get why it is like it is, i just dont like it.

No but Calgary had no problem giving Monahan just a little less. Pretty unfair to Gaudreau that he doesnt get more. Its not like i feel bad for him, he will be rich as hell no matter what but he should have gotten more. He scored ppg last season! Monahan is great dont get me wrong but Gaudreau is another level.

This is a good deal for both sides.

Gaudreau gets paid now and is only going to be 29 when he hits UFA.

Calgary gets their star player under contract for a very nice sum for 6 seasons.

most people figured that the AAV would be in that range if they went less than 8 years.

More than I thought he'd get (6.5ish) but close.

At least it's done.

He had almost zero RFA rights. I'm really not shocked he signed for less than 7. People acting like this is a steal, what else was it gonna be? Flames weren't going to break the bank here and stood ground. They had all the leverage.

It's definitely less than he's worth. He's one of the best players in the league right now, better than Stamkos and people thought he was signed to a good deal.

I don't have any beef with your opinion, I'm just saying it doesn't make him an idiot, it shows where his priorities are as a hockey player, money is not the most important thing to him, and it's nice to see.

Radio speculating that based on Johnny's tweet, that he was the one that decided to end the negotiations and sign. Agent likely wanted to hold out longer.

Johnny just wants to play

Of course players always ask for more and settle down to a more reasonable salary. Good deal for the Shames.

Great deal for both sides the way I see it. Treliving gets Gaudreau's cap hit lower for salary cap flexibility and Johnny gets to become a UFA quicker.

A lot of people won't see it right away. But $6.75 million US dollars is a still a phenomenal deal for the Gaudreau camp for the following factors.

- He'll be playing for a Canadian team, therefore his $6.75M will actually be closer to $9M here in Canada.
- Alberta taxes are amongst the lowest in league (top 5 I believe) whereas the rest of the teams in Canada are amongst the worst when it comes to taxes league wide.
- Alberta is experiencing a recession right now and real estate is at bargain compared to previous years. So at the very least, he'll get a nice house for cheap.
- So, don't feel too bad for Johnny everyone. If you feel like he got hosed, then you're not looking at the whole picture.
