Well, they lose two years of Johnny but get a cheaper cap hit for 6.

Makes sense for the Flames, and for Johnny as he can cash in @ 29 for what will eventually be a ridiculous paycheque.

They get him for basically the entirety of his prime. Yeah it would be nice if it was 7 or 8, but the price is at a great number.

Well, that's when the window closes. Brad won this negotiation, and I really hope JG can bring the level he has shown so far. It feels like this only starts a countdown until he's gone though.

I expected he'd get 7-7.5 over 8, but at 6 years this makes sense. If I was the Flames I'd rather have him for 8 years at the higher AAV, but this deal is fine I suppose.

These comments reflect my thoughts too.

Johnny Hockey at $6.75 through what should be his prime years is an absolutely beautiful deal for the Flames. Excellent AAV for sure and still buys 2 years of UFA.

I can't believe the people saying this is a steal..... Seriously Johnny had no leverage, if anything Johnny got a steal of a deal.

I said 6.5-7 would be fair and I was correct. It's not a steal, it was either sit out or sign a deal.

With Gio's contract coming off the books in the same summer that makes it easier to pay the man again hopefully. I know there was talk about going out to Philly or Jersey, but I want him for his whole career.

Except the difference between FA @ 29 vs FA @ 31 is huge. I don't think Gaudreau will decline barring injury much into his mid 30's as he has elite IQ and is a great skater, but he will make absolute bank going FA @ 29. A team is going to pay him all of the money.

Calgary wanted a lower cap hit so they lose him at 29 instead of at 31. Here's hoping for them they win something by then. Cap hit is good for Calgary, term is good for Gaudreau.

No doubt the shorter term, and lack of bought ufa years, was the price for getting the hit down. The player also gets a sizeable bonus today and on July 1st before the 2020-2021 season (which could be a lock out year).
