seems like a solid deal for both sides. I was thinking 6.5 to 7 per, but 6.3 is in the ballpark. The guy is a stud. I wanted the Oilers to draft him so badly, but the Flames stole him with the pick just before the Oiler's. I guess it worked out for both teams, as the Oilers more than likely would not have gotten McDavid if they had drafted Monahan. It should result in a solid rivalry for the next 5 to 10 years. The Flames have some really nice pieces on their roster, Edmonton does as well. I can't wait until the first Battle of Alberta 7 game playoff match up. It's been far too long.

It's already a good deal. He's basically a 30 goal, 60 point guy who plays against top opposition every night, has done it for multiple years now. I like this deal a lot better than MacKinnon's based on the earning aspect of it even though MacKinnon has a higher ceiling.

It's not even about the ceiling, though. Mackinnon has put up more points p/60 than Monahan. That's a fact. Mack just hasn't been able to stay healthy the last two years. Mack is going to explode this year, just you watch. I think its funny the people that are calling Monahan's deal a steal yet Mack's isn't?

Very good deal. Not a steal, but not overpayment either; I'd argue slightly underpaid, especially if he reaches and stays in that 70-80pt range throughout the prime of his career, and gives the Flames some future flexibility as well when they are ready to compete for a Cup.

Now it's time for Gaudreau to step up to the plate.

My response was only relating to Monahans sh%. Its been 'high' his entire pro career. So either he is inexplicably lucky or there is a tangible explanation for it.

You don't need to be "inexplicably lucky". There is enough year to year variation to skew a 3 season sample size pretty easily. His career shooting % is 3 points higher than what you'd expect given where he takes his shots from so shot quality isn't the reason.

Seems like a good deal for CGY. Thought Monahan might get a slightly higher AAV with such a long term.

Good deal

Kadri contract keeps getting better and better

Why are you bringing up Kadri?

Age comparison:

20 62 points vs. 12
21 63 points vs. 7

By year:
14/15 31 goals and 62 points vs. 18 goals and 39 points
15/16 27 goals and 63 points vs. 17 goals and 45 points

I'm sure the Flames would love for Gaudreau to see this as a kane/toews thing. He'd be leaving a lot of money on the table if he did though.

Beefy. That is a totally okay contract, in my opinion. Monahan has work to do as far as his two-way play (ironic since that's what people seem to think he's best at) but it's a solid deal for a kid who has broken 30 goals, and approached it a second time, while on his ELC.

I always wonder about these extra $0.75m on the AAV for big contracts.

Monahan must have wanted to go above MacKinnon the way Giroux wanted to jump slightly ahead of Getzlaf.
