That's a good chunk of cash for a young player.
I do think this is a good deal for both sides though. I really like Monahan's game and if continues his progression (no reason he shouldn't) then this should be a very good deal for Calgary in the next couple years.

Good for both.

Yea... "around" could mean +/- $200,000... Gonna wait and see before I judge the contract.

Because that extra 200K is really gonna make it a bad contract if it goes to 6.5?

6.5 is just as good for a 21 year old first line center, who has two 60+ point seasons under his belt already, and has scored 80 goals in his first three seasons.

That gives a range of 6.1 to 6.5...it's material.

It's the new norm, it would seem. Which makes sense. We all know players decline as they cross the 30 year old threshold (with few exceptions), it's time contract structure begin to start reflecting that.

No, don't think 6.5 is a bad, just less good. Bad would be 7+. And because it's only 7 years, 6.5 makes it even worse...

Wasn't $6.something what Toews and Kane got for their first post ELC contracts? If you consider how much contracts are going up these days, I'd say that's very reasonable for a young stud like Monahan. And those contracts were only 3ish years I think?

It's already a good deal. He's basically a 30 goal, 60 point guy who plays against top opposition every night, has done it for multiple years now. I like this deal a lot better than MacKinnon's based on the earning aspect of it even though MacKinnon has a higher ceiling.

It's not that Monahan is an elite sniper. It's that he usually only shoots when he has good positioning. Usually in the slot on a pass from the top of the circles.

That's been addressed before. He does ok but there is nothing particularly special about Monahan's shot locations. Both Scheifele and MacKinnion have significantly better i xG/60 over their career, Barkov's is slightly lower. MacKinnion does take a lot of longer compared to the other 3 though. Scheiflele is the clear leader in high danger chances and expected shooting %.

8.6% of the Cap is a very reasonable deal for a young 1C. To compare, this would be equivalent to a $5.5M AAV deal signed for the 2011-12 season. Good signing.

Monahan's a very steady player, so it's a good contract.

Kadri contract keeps getting better and better

My response was only relating to Monahans sh%. Its been 'high' his entire pro career. So either he is inexplicably lucky or there is a tangible explanation for it. xG/60 does nothing to address shot quality.

Decent number. I thought he'd get a bit more. He may still have an opportunity for another good contract after this if he puts up good numbers in his late 20's.

$44,100,000 guaranteed at age 21 is good.

This part gets ignored by some people who think he should have taken a bridged deal.

PLUS, he is a UFA at age 28/29 entering season on his next contract...instead of in the 30's. So he is still set up for a 6 year deal as a UFA on his next one.

Money.
