All the people crying about Monahan getting more than Barkov were acting like it was a huge amount more. 6.3 is fine. Glad to see he's locked up. Now time for Johnny.

We also got more term, wasn't Barkov only 5 years? I'd gladly pay an extra 400K more per year to get 2 more years.

Edit: It was 6 years, but yeah, still happy.

Not a great deal on his part. Should be a steal for the last 5 years of that deal.

It's a fair deal. If Bennett becomes the number 1C his point totals might fall. Very happy with the deal regardless! Now I just hope Johnny Hockey follows suite and signs a seven year deal.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but Monahan is not "clearly" better than Scheifele.

Monahan's goal totals are propped up by an unusually high shooting percentage. Now, it's been unusually high for three seasons, so is that actually his norm? Maybe, I don't watch him enough to have an opinion, but it would put him on par with the game's truly elite snipers. But if it comes down 2 or 3 percentage points, as one would eventually expect, then the goal totals will come down as well.

Shameless self repost:

Monahan has more career goals (76) than anyone from his draft year:

More than anyone in the previous draft year:

And from the draft year before that, only Landeskog has more goals.

And from the draft year before that, only Hall, Seguin, Johansen, Skinner and Tarasenko have more goals.

Real happy with this deal, was thinking $6.7 per.

Very nice. Monahan is a fantastic player and the Flames have a great young core of talented players to build around going forward!

--> outproduces Scheifele in every single league at every single age
--> nuff said

Like the year Schiefele put up 18 points in 4 games against him in head to head matchups? ;)

More to the point. Monahan's best OHL season was 78 points in 58 games, Scheifele's was 79 points in 48 games. In the NHL
5v5 P/60 Scheifele 1.99 v Monahan 1.71.
CF% Scheifele 52.31% v Monahan 45.8%.
Rel CF% Scheifele 1.42 v Monahan -1.52.

Monahan does have a small lead in overall points but that's largely a result of more games played and more power play time. Scheifele has more 5v5 points in spite of playing 21 fewer games. Point totals do figure heavily into what contracts GM's are willing to give out, so I expect Monahan will get a bigger number over a shorter term even though he isn't likely to match Scheifele for either points or all around play over the next 6-8 years.

It's not that Monahan is an elite sniper. It's that he usually only shoots when he has good positioning. Usually in the slot on a pass from the top of the circles.
