Do you really think Lou didn't have autonomy to make moves himself?
The Leafs Management was always referred to as a collective think tank. Funny how that changes when the narrative changes. I would say Dubas, Hunter, and Babcock(see the post link you quoted)and ultimately Shanahan for approving it are all responsible for the Marleau signing.

When will Carolina be retiring his jersey to the rafters ?

Would be totally a dick move if the Sharks didn't offer him a contract now lol.

Why? Marleau left SJ for the Leafs for a better contract. I think they will offer him a near league minimum offer but if they didn’t because he wasn’t in their plans then I wouldn’t blame Wilson one bit. It’s business

The Sharks could make a statement by not signing him: if you want to dine elsewhere, then fine, go -- but don't expect to come back here to retire as a Shark.

I don't mind what they do, either way, but I don't think the Sharks have any obligation whatsoever to offer Marleau a contract.

I don't understand why a player can't just retire now that the back diving aspect has been removed. You could even put in some clause that in order to retire they need to ensure that they aren't paid what was left on the contract. So if someone got a huge signing bonus they would need to payoff whatever the difference between salary and cap hit was.

Marleau didn't add on a year to lower the cap hit, it's just weird that players aren't allowed to retire without crippling their team. This doesn't apply to those back diving contracts, really only to just any contracts signed since the new CBA.

*edit I don't think Marleau would have retired if this was the case, it's more of a comment on the current rules.

Good for Patty; good for the Leafs for moving on; and especially good for Dundon for opening the wallet and getting an excellent return for cash and unused cap space. Win-win-win.

Now it might possibly be good for the Sharks, and even better for Patrick Marleau too!

That's a huge difference. I believe Carolina really wanted Marleau to play for them to help mentor the kids. Leafs would have kept him if they weren't so up against the cap.

They may have expressed interest, but remember Marleau had to waive his NMC before a deal could go down. In order to do so, he had to have assurance that Carolina would buy him out to let him go play where he wants. In other words, the Canes never really expected him to play. But if he did change his mind, hey, all the better.

That said, i don't think the Canes feel like they need mentors anymore. Experience is always good, but Justin Williams already played the mentor role to the T.

No, I mean he's going to play this upcoming season and another season after that.

I disagree. I don't think anyone will want him, even for league minimum and I don't think he would play for league minimum. He will be 40 before the season starts. It is time to hang up the skates. If he was any good at all Canes would have kept him for the paltry $400k and 0 cap hit they are going to save.

I love seeing all these other teams fans crying because the Canes got over on this deal.
If that first rd pick turns out. And the Canes can be picking as high as #11 in 2020. Or if the pick reverts to 2021 when it is unprotected as high as #1. The Canes really could go over on this deal even more.

Carolina bought him out as a favor. He wasn't going to play for them.
