We all know this. Leaf fans have been saying it for two years. His theory was that if he signs there and they win the Cup, it's the greatest deal of 2019. Those familiar with his shtick understand the why. It's just amusing to watch him crash and burn so often.

Leafs fans having been saying that Hurricanes would buy out Marleau for 2 years?

We could get the 1st only because they had been so committed and couldn't backtrack.

They don't often go up and down as they approach 40. By the time they get there it is just down - and sharply.

Why would he want to play in SJ for league minimum? It doesn't make sense for him. That money is chump change to him. Even if he still has the love of the game, pro hockey is hard on the body. Its time for him to get out without doing any more damage. JMO, YMMV.

Alfredsson dropped off the last year in Ottawa then went to Detroit and had a better year. It does happen.

Why would he want to play in SJ for league minimum? Because his family is there and that's what they can afford on the salary. They can throw performance bonuses at him to make it better for him but if he wants to play in San Jose, which he does, he's going to have to sign a team-friendly deal. This isn't that hard.

Players who get bought out, does that officially end that contract on that day meaning Marleau could sign right now? Or do they also have to wait until July 1st too?

OK, SJS over any other team but how about retirement over SJS? League minimum really is chicken feed for him. He will be taxed on it like he was making about 5 mil per year for the first half. Because that is what he will make in calendar year 2019. Unless he has managed his money very poorly the difference in his income between playing for that money and not playing at all will be almost indistinguishable.

So he will have to work hard, abuse his body, be away from his family and travel 15-20k miles just for the fun of it. At 40 YO.

That seems like a pointless question to ask given he's already stated on numerous occasions that he wants to play and since he's going to get paid at least 4 million for whatever he ends up doing this season, I think he'll be alright with the money he brings in. lol

If that first rd pick turns out. And the Canes can be picking as high as #11 in 2020. Or if the pick reverts to 2021 when it is unprotected as high as #1. The Canes really could go over on this deal even more.

If the pick is #1 in 2021, that means the leafs missed the playoffs both years which means everyone on the team contracted boneitis

Believe it or not there are a lot of players that are more interested in winning a cup than making more money at this stage of their career. Also, it is very hard for a lot of players to accept retirement after playing in the NHL for 20 years. As far as the abuse his body will take, playing another season is a lot less concerning when it comes to Marleau considering how healthy he has been his whole career. Its not like he has had multiple concussions or knee surgery.

Basically, any money Marleau makes will be more than he would have in Toronto, since he already got his buyout. So while maybe he could find someone to pay him more, he's already in a better spot this year than he thought he'd be.

As for if SJ would want him... I think most teams should want a player coming off a 39 point year ~$1M. It's amazing how much of HFBoards thinks that either you're Ovechkin, you're on an ELC, or you're complete horseshit. I think half of HFBoards posters think a good roster is one with all of the bottom 6 forwards just young AHLers.

He isn't top 6 material, but he's a fine 3rd liner for cheap.

It's not a 21 team league anymore where 16 teams made the playoffs. There are no guarantees in a 31 team league where parity is a lot more apparent. Making the playoffs is not a forgone conclusion in this league.
