I really dont see Laine re-signing given his injury proneness. Hes obviously going to want 7 years, and as a UFA he wont be cheap (unless hes injured again into next season).

Hughes is going to have enough big RFA contracts to worry about in the next 4 years (Hutson, Demidov, 2025 pick, Dach, Mailloux, Reinbacher, etc). Adding an expensive UFA will just cause massive cap problems long term again. Better to spend on a decent UFA WHEN they are acutal contenders.

If you think we will re-sign Laine, that Newhook is a top 6 player in a good team and that Dach is a bonafide top 6 player long term already, thank god YOU are not the GM.
Far too soon to say what they will do with Laine. If he plays well this year an next there are many options. Starting with re-signing him. If he wants too much then he is a UFA trade rental to the highest bidder.

If he is injured or doesn't play well then let him walk....

I don’t believe we can go wrong with Schaefer, Martone or Misa. I voted Schaefer but I definitely see the interest in Martone and Misa. Personally I would avoid Hagens unless it was a Caufield situation where he is free falling because of his size. Then it becomes a no brainer to use the Calgary pick for him.

Right now the top 3 for me are…

James Hagens C
Porter Martone RW
Michael Misa LW

The top 6 is somewhat quality with Matthew Schaefer Roger McQueen and Anton Frondell.

I don’t think Frondell has top line potential. Another project like Kirby Dach. McQueen looks like a long term will take longer to grow into his frame. Dach like player. I don’t think we need too many Kirby Dach. Schaefer we have Guhle Hutson Reinbacher Mailloux. I think we are missing a Hagens Martone and Misa.

Hagens will take the pressure off Suzuki also is a left handed Center which we need. He’s got the most upside and I think could be a Nico Hieshier like player.

Martone is what we need if Dach turned out to be a centre. Martone I think is a true leader and a playoff guy. I think if the old days Shanahan career. Slafkovsky Dach Martone would be a great physical line.

Misa is a goal scorer which we need. Caufield is a one dimensional player teams catch on. Misa is pretty much guaranteed 30 goals 30 assists.

Demidov Hagens Laine
Slafkovsky Suzuki Caufield
Newhook Hage Dach
Tuch Beck Xhekaj

Or

Slafkovsky Suzuki Caufield
Demidov Hage Martone
Newhook Dach Laine
Tuch Beck Xhekaj

Or
Slafkovsky Suzuki Caufield
Misa Hage Demidov
Newhook Dach Laine
Tuch Beck Xhekaj

Such a strong crop for the OHL this year. The entire top 10 of that league has a legit chance of going in the first round.

It makes you wonder where Martone/Misa/Schaefer will play next year. With the new CHL-NCAA ruling, I am curious to see if the CHL-AHL rule is revisited.

Maybe at some point down the road, I can't see the CHL ever opening that door without a fight though. There's a lot of money in it for them .

Whether it’s Hagens, Schaefer, Martone or Misa, everyone of them fills a need for us. Top 6 Cs, no.1 D, big talented winger with size and grit.

I don’t think we can go wrong drafting in the top 4.
yeah one of these 4 would be great,
Honestly all 4 could be pick #1, no clear #1 here for me.

Is there though? I see people buying CHL tickets to go see a McDavid or Bedard level of prospect, but I don’t see people buying tickets to go see a Shane Wright, which is the level of prospect this type of agreement would help.

The three leagues still need their top 18/19 year old players to help draw the average crowds, especially in the smaller markets. If the AHL becomes more of a development league, the CHL would see a direct impact IMO. Maybe not a giant one, but a 20% drop in some of those markets would be a big deal.

Top 32 right now, way more limited viewings than before cause you know, 11 week old babies take up a lot of time.

If our CAL/FLA pick ends up being a late first rounder (#25-#32) and Cameron Schmidt is still on the board got to take him. Especially if he falls to one of our early 2nd. Don’t care about the Caufield size concerns, can’t teach that shot release+goal scoring instinct+speed.

Schmidt-Hage/Hagens/Misa-Demidov. Give me that please.

Listened to Pronman & Wheeler on The Athletic podcast while cycling back home tonight. Apparently, McQueen tweaked his back and has been dealing with this injury for a little while. Pronman said it isn't clear what the nature of the injury is. Something to keep in mind as the season goes along. If it's a hernia like Lindstrom, he's a DND in my opinion.

The conversation about McQueen is around 15:00-16:30 of the episode.
