It might be cute to have Marleau out with the Sharks to end his career but in terms of actual play this guy is toast.
He's definitely a really good 3rd-4th liner playing those type of roles/minutes. Babcock was just horrendous at deploying him properly

Happy for Marleau!!!

He gets to end his career in San Jose (hopefully and for cheap). As much as I hated seeing him on the ice last season we have to remember that fault lies with who gave him that dumb contract.

Kind of a double edged sword...ya Babs way over used him....but you can't pay 6.25 for a 3rd/4th liner either. Perfect storm for SJ here.

He played 3rd/4th almost all year. He had a few games playing higher (which were a disaster). I remember everyone complaining about him just being on the ice at the end of the season and into the playoffs

He's hardly done. He's just a third liner now. He has another season him at least.

He's really not. He was used as a 3rd liner and had some of the absolute worst offensive impact stats in the league. If you put him on with 2 average 3rd liners, he'll drag their offensive output down to 4th line level single handedly.

He's a third liner in the sense that if you put him on with 2 elite 3rd liners, you'll have a kind of passably average 3rd line.

We had several Marlies that would have been noticeably better players last year.

Would be totally a dick move if the Sharks didn't offer him a contract now lol.

Why? Marleau left SJ for the Leafs for a better contract. I think they will offer him a near league minimum offer but if they didn’t because he wasn’t in their plans then I wouldn’t blame Wilson one bit. It’s business

He'll probably sign with the Leafs after seeing how many minutes Babcock gives his scrubs in a game 7 3rd period.

The Hurricanes weren't expecting Marleau to play for them. They didn't completely shut the door on it and wanted to have a discussion with Marleau, but they knew very well that Marleau wanted to go back to the Western Conference (likely SJ) so it was going to be a tough sell. When they took his contract they agreed in a gentlemans agreement to buy him out, and honored this once it was clear he didn't want to play in Carolina.

The Hurricanes basically bought a 1st round pick for 3.833.333$ in actual money. That's a great deal and teams would be buying 1st rounders all the time if it cost them under 4M.

Hurricanes were able to do so because they don't need that 6M cap space this season. Well, at least they clearly didn't have plans to use it.

100% any team rebuilding should have been all over that deal, and to think that Carolina is already good with that much room should be extra praised by their fans.

Last year, the NHL informed Colorado and Washington that it did not like the arrangement with Orpik. This year we see Carolina and Toronto engage in essentially the same type of transaction, with the only difference being that Carolina expresses a public desire for Marleau to play for the Canes and then waits for a few days before buying him out.

Orpik got traded to the Avs, bought out and then went back to the Caps and sign. Marleau is not signing with the Leafs, honestly completely different situation and foolish for you to bring up.

Montreal is closer to San Jose than San Jose, so I think he will sign in Detroit.

Not surprised by this move. Carolina isn't a bad team to play for, but even if San Jose sucked major ass, he would likely still go back there for his last season.
He will sign for league minimum to go to SJ.
He's not playing anywhere else. My he got his wish and bankrolled a crap load of money
