Montreal is closer to San Jose than San Jose, so I think he will sign in Detroit.

Not surprised by this move. Carolina isn't a bad team to play for, but even if San Jose sucked major ass, he would likely still go back there for his last season.

San Jose is where the heart is. Don't we all have a little bit of San Jose in us wherever we are?

So Marleau is going to go back to San Jose for near league minimum? That makes sense to me. He's not really negotiating from a position of power here, it's really obvious that it's San Jose or no one.

Don’t want to spend more than league min on him. We have more important players to spend on like Meier, Labanc, Thornton and (maybe) Pavs or Nyquist

They're apparently paying his bonus now per the tweet, so it's only an 833,333 actual salary payout this season and next.

Good value for a likely 15-25 pick.
we have to pay his bonus. Bonuses dont go away cuz someone is bought out before the schedule payment date.

But, does SAN Jose actually want him?????

I'm sure he'd be fine with playing for LA or Anaheim too. He just needs to be closer to home. San Jose is his #1 destination, but that doesn't mean he's destined to end up there. He would need to make very little to fit into their cap situation where as LA and Anaheim have more room to play with and Marleau could be a mentor to their younger kids.

What a waste of asset and time for Carolina

Even after the buyout?

The Hurricanes weren't expecting Marleau to play for them. They didn't completely shut the door on it and wanted to have a discussion with Marleau, but they knew very well that Marleau wanted to go back to the Western Conference (likely SJ) so it was going to be a tough sell. When they took his contract they agreed in a gentlemans agreement to buy him out, and honored this once it was clear he didn't want to play in Carolina.

The Hurricanes basically bought a 1st round pick for 3.833.333$ in actual money. That's a great deal and teams would be buying 1st rounders all the time if it cost them under 4M.

Hurricanes were able to do so because they don't need that 6M cap space this season. Well, at least they clearly didn't have plans to use it.

Last year, the NHL informed Colorado and Washington that it did not like the arrangement with Orpik. This year we see Carolina and Toronto engage in essentially the same type of transaction, with the only difference being that Carolina expresses a public desire for Marleau to play for the Canes and then waits for a few days before buying him out.

That's a huge difference. I believe Carolina really wanted Marleau to play for them to help mentor the kids. Leafs would have kept him if they weren't so up against the cap.

It might be cute to have Marleau out with the Sharks to end his career but in terms of actual play this guy is toast.

Eh. He can still be a decent middle of the road 3rd liner, but if you're paying him anything more than 1 x 1.5-2 million, it's a bad deal.

as a fan of a team that competes with San Jose, this certainly has a bad smell. San Jose gets to pay league minimum for a player with a much higher value.
