yeah the canucks need depth everywhere but left defense is i think their strongest position with rathbone, truscott, jurmo, pettersson and kudrayatsev.

Pettersson and maybe Truscutt yes but it doesn’t sound like the organization thinks much of Jurmo and he might not be signed, Rathbone probably isn’t long for the organization, and Kudryatsev is a very young, very minor prospect.

Hirose is a beautiful skater and I wouldn’t mind giving him a look.

That's not a good list. Rathbone, despite scoring yesterday, doesn't look like he has a future in the organization. The won't be in the AHL until 24-25 season and that's if Jurmo and Truscott prove to be worth contracts. With NCAA I don't really like adding them top the prospect pool like this since they pretty much need to make some sort of impact immediately, either in the AHL or NHL.

Hirose turns 24 in two weeks. Hughes is younger than him. As of now, going into next season his competition within the organization is OEL, Wolanin, and Brisebois.

As soon as it looked unlikely to land Livingstone, my dream became Hirose, Sasson and one of Haman-Aktell or Malinski. Looks like we could be two thirds of the way there.

hardy aktell? his skating is a big negative for me. costs nothing but a contract slot so worth a look but i don't expect much from him
Have you watched him extensively? I don't watch any SHL apart from highlights these days and haven't really seen him.

sure, the canucks have an awful system so even their best position is bad. i think 2-3 of their left handed dmen will play nhl games though (or already have, like rathbone) with a chance for one or two of them to become meaningful players

that's more than i can say about their wingers or right defenders

no, but the knock on him as a draft prospect was his skating and he's had multiple leg and hip injuries since then and is by all reports an even worse skater now

i'm also biased because i just really don't think there's a place in the nhl going forward for below average skaters

Winger depth is pretty much the only thing the Canucks have going for them. But, yeah, it's a pretty barren system everywhere. Apart from Lekkerimaki hitting, everyone else profiles as a bottom-6er or 3rd pairing defender.

Hirose seems like the guy every twitter guy I follow thinks is the best D prospect in the NCAA this season.

So that would be cool.

i think he's the best (undrafted, there's this hughes kid that's pretty good too) d prospect in the ncaa but i only really watch big 10, nchc and wcha games. i couldn't tell you anything about players outside those conferences

The left side D will be crowded if the Canucks land both Hirose and Aktell

Competition for fringe players is good. If you have Wolanin, Brisebois, Hirose, and Aktell are battling for a 3rd-pairing NHL role you are doing quite well. As soon as one falters, you have someone else chomping at the bit.

The gospel, hockeydb says right.

It's wrong. He shoots left.

1. Hardy Haman Aktell, LHD, Vaxjo-SHL: Haman Aktell, a former Nashville draft pick, has been a quality member of a top SHL team this season in Vaxjo. Haman Aktell is a huge defenseman who was often injured shortly after Nashville drafted him. He’s been healthy the last few years, though, and his offensive touch has taken off this season. I don’t view him as a big points producer in North America, but he can make a good first pass and has a strong point shot. His skating will be a major limitation in the NHL, but I think he defends well enough to potentially overcome that and be a third-pair defenseman in the league.

With Hardy Haman Aktell, his team is currently in a 3-3 series tie but finished first in the league. Unless there's a major upset (their opponents finished 10th in a 14 team league) he won't even be available until next season.

Too quick on the draw for me!

Here's Pronman's opinion on Hirose, if anyone was curious.

22. Akito Hirose, LHD, Minnesota State-CCHA: Hirose has been an important player for Mankato over the last few years. He’s a talented offensive player. He’s a strong skater, unusually strong for a college free-agent target and has strong playmaking abilities to go with that. Hirose has a chance to make it on what he can do with the puck, but whether he can defend men will be a question. His skating will help him, but I wouldn’t call him the hardest to play against defenseman.
