this is based on observation and probably isn't actually backed up by anything, but...

man I dislike Carolina's gameplan and think it's also a big reason they struggle to move on further in the playoffs

so much of their offense is based around "control the puck, take a ton of shots, something will go in". They do have talent but their default is "throw pucks at the net, into bodies, whatever" and is just ugly to watch.

They're a good solid all around team but it's just hard to go far with that as your main offensive style. "playoff hockey" still means you need to make skill plays, not JUST go for tips and rebounds

Also, while they are a good defensive team, they do seem to break down a bit if you basically punch them in the mouth. The Rangers have had success when they've just played fast and aggressive. It keeps Carolina from being on the cycle all game long, creates more breakdowns from them, and the Rangers get more good scoring chances. This isn't revolutionary, this works against most teams, but people are just kinda used to seeing carolina dominate the possession game and turns out if you pressure them they're like any other team and will give up chances

So maybe it's a different league but that offensive strategy seemed to be the strategy that won the Kings their two cups. As I said 2022 isn't 2012 or even 2014 but it wasn't long ago that @Machinehead was arguing that this is the way you win in the playoffs.

I guess that 1% was enough to be third in scoring for NYR

Ah a Jackets fan.

Honestly, how many games have you watched in total?

He has been horrible. Most of the people on this board who aren't delusional will tell you or you can flip back to any threads prior to tonight's game. As usual, his supporters who have been in hiding for most of the playoffs materialized because he scored a power play goal tonight.

He is still effective on the power play, mostly.

He has been trash at even strength.

He leads the playoffs in turnovers. By 9 turnovers.

We gave ourselves a chance to advance. I think that is cause for celebration.

And although I'm not crazy about our chances Monday, anything can happen. Should be a hard-fought battle. I see another Game 7 OT thriller on the horizon. Just hope we come out on top. Could you imagine two Game 7 OT winners in one postseason? That would be more than Amazing. Oh Baby, I can't wait!

Yeah, it's not a bad strategy and the quantity teams certainly do better in the playoffs. Of course, if your gameplan is "eventually it goes in" you run the risk that it just...doesn't. Hockey is random.

It certainly was a different league too. The Kings were a 55% corsi team when nobody was volume shooting as a gameplan. They snuck up on the league.

This year, there were four 55% corsi teams. The league caught up to the Kings and then left them behind. The league is constantly evolving.

The league is also WAAAAAAY higher scoring than in the Kings heyday. That makes it less likely that you'll win because you scored two lucky goals, requires you to do more than just play strong defense, and gives scoring quality more room to flourish. The Kings played in a league rife with 2-1 games where nobody scored nice goals. You need nice goals AND stupid deflections to keep up in 2022.

He’s got a card blanche since he scored the series winning goal vs the Pens

There used to be a point where I couldn't figure out what made playoff hockey so special. It was high paced but all of the skill was gone. Thank God that's not the case anymore.

Yeah, subjectively I'm not a fan. It can work and if the Rangers won a Cup doing it, then great, but it's hard to watch at times.

I like a good cagey affair and I like my deflection goals but I also like variety.

That's why I said this was my favorite playoffs. The old teams were probably better but they played game 1 of this series for like, entire series. If I had to watch one more 2-1 game against the Capitals I was giving it all up and becoming a monk.

I can't imagine hating a 5 game series more than I did the 5 game series against the Pens when we won four games 2-1. The problem with your post though is that every time they played in Carolina they played that game. Carolina dictated that game and they haven't been able to overcome it.

Oh god, yes!

f*** that unholy series!

You're right, that has to be the worst 5-game win in sports history. Hated it.

I see what you're saying about the games in Carolina but like, I'm not saying every game has to be a barnburner. I just don't wanna feel like I'm following a script.

Look at 2015:

Gm 1, Rd 1: Rangers take an early lead and hold on
Gm 3, Rd 1: Rangers take an early lead and hold on
Gm 5, Rd 1: Rangers take an early lead and hold on
Gm 1, Rd 2: Caps take an early lead and hold on
Gm 2, Rd 2: Rangers take an early lead and hold on
Gm 3, Rd 2: Caps take an early lead and hold on
Gm 4, Rd 2: Caps take an early lead and hold on
Gm 6, Rd 2: Rangers take an early lead and hold on

Of all of those games, #5 against the Pens and #1 against the Caps are the only ones where the team that gave up the first goal even managed to tie the game at any point, and both ended 2-1.

Like, game 5 against Carolina was a stinkburger but we tied the game. By 2015 standards, even that was off-script. Hell, the Canes scored a third goal! Scandalous!

Not exactly a fun series but Kreider tying game 5 with 100 seconds to play to stave off elimination is one of my greatest hockey memories. Then a game 7 OT.

Yeah there were definitely good moments to be had in 2015. The three hours to get there was like waiting for the bus.

The first two series in 2015 and every series in 2012 was painful. The Tampa series in 2015 had some exciting games but then game 7 was like game two of this Canes series but at home and in game 7.

Holy shit, don't get me started on 2012.

That Ottawa series was like watching flies f***.

With the exception of game 1 when the Rangers somehow got a 4 goal lead (and proceeded to almost blow it). Every other game was a 3-2 slog. Also there was a period of like 5 years when the Rangers were a guaranteed loss in overtime. That wasn't fun.

MSG Post Game Show Highlights and Commentary .

Great postgame show!

"Rangers Fans,... Buckle up and Bear down!"

"They stare down and shut up any talk of elimination."

John G was in rare form.

And Valley continues to keep us in stitches. His comment of,.. "This is another moment where I was grabbing Hank's suit,... it's so tight, I really couldn't get a good grip...." had me rolling.

On a Side Note,... I hate those skinny designer suits. I don't know how these ever came into fashion. Not only are they ugly and look uncomfortably tight, but half this country is overweight. How is anyone on the large size supposed to wear these? And you can see in half the people who do wear them, it doesn't fit properly in the shoulders or when buttoned. Hank is the exception, rather than the norm.
