Not really a tournament I ever really care about so easy to laugh at how hilariously poorly coached this was. That was the worst display of a PK I have ever seen in 30 years of watching hockey. I would hope that coach is never anywhere close to TC ever again.

Fantilli with one of the best GW assist I’ve seen in a long time too ;)

Kemell is a beauty. This team with this coaching, goaltender and lack of talent on the team making it into semis.. It's a good result already.
It's definitely a win. Didn't expect Finland to get to play all games.

I think he might be too young for Liiga yet. Besides, I think Jokerit want him to be on their return team in 23-24 season.
It's his draft season, of course he's not too young for Liiga if he's like a top 60 pick. And he's not going to miss a season just because Jokerit aren't playing next season. Jokerit also have not had a path from jrs to the pro team - they're essentially separate entities.

I'm feeling that Finland beats Sweden but loses in the final to either USA or CZE. Those are the 2 best teams in my opinion.
US

Finland/Sweden

Czech

I'm hoping we can sneak out a bronze against the deflated loser of the Sweden/Finland matchup.

Hope so. All in all with his size and skill, physicality, shot and such he could be comparable to Laine but we'll have to see how he does in Liiga.
Yep, his shot isn’t Laine-level but his other qualities could make up for it.

Finland will be 2nd or 4th. This same coach delivered 4th place last year too for Finland if I remember right.

This won't make sense... but I think they're the only ones that could beat the US (SISU, team game, confident nation, intangibles). But I think they are 50-50 with Swedes and I don't think Swedes matchup well against States.

Yes I know that makes no sense.lol

I mean, yeah, it drew from like a quarter of the CHL. Offensive talent was obviously there, but absolutely zero structure and what has to be the worst PK in tournament history had only one possible conclusion. This game (outside of the PK) and the third period against Germany were the only times the team established any kind of consistent pressure.

Still, credit to the Finns for converting on their chances.

Not even a quarter. No QMJHL teams, and it was the non-playoff teams from the OHL/WHL too. It was a C-level roster with over half of these guys not even coming close to making the roster with everyone available, but it was still composed of a bunch of guys who should be making cases to get drafted this year and there are a handful who definitely are going to fall down some rankings (or off of boards entirely) after their performance at this tournament. I don't think anyone raised their stock (at least for 2022; the 2023/2024 guys were mostly fine considering their age) besides maybe Reid Dyck, which is hard to believe considering how poor his save percentage was.

Connor Bedard and goaltending were the only reasons this team won games. Even Adam Fantilli was extremely inconsistent.

Finland in the recent years has been quite good against USA. Two golds and if I remember right, both times against USA in the final, but I don't think that Finland got all the right pieces now. Coaching and goaltending being issues.

Finland lost to USA 1-6 in a practice game before the tournament and I don't imagine that it will go much better.

USA will be in finals, and Finland either loses to them or plays in bronze match, where they can win. The Bronze match depends a lot about how motivated the opponents are for it. If Team USA drops down to bronze match for example, Finland can actually beat them because they tend to not really care about a bronze. Czechia will likely try hard though, bronze's big for them.

I feel like Finland has figured out a formula for winning that suits them to a tee!

Liiga guys beating NHL players for World's is a hell of an achievement for instance.

Several times on paper I've thought they weren't the Fav but there they are with Gold medals.

How about Pickering? In the games I watched with TSN commentary they were talking about how great he is all the time.

Usually Finland has much better coaching than this though. This year we have the guy who's mostly famous for being the coach Patrik Laine showed middle finger to.

Nope, Petri Karjalainen was the coach last year. Marttila was the U18 coach in 2009, 2013, 2015 and 2019.

But speaking of last years, this Canada team reminded me of team Finland last year. Lot of skill, but no game system.

Great win by team Finland, now we only have to ruin the day from other two teams.

But that's very different with the best Finnish coach of all time in J.Jalonen.

Well, these really are fun games to watch - everyone skates like crazy and disciplined team play is forgotten about every other second. Canada's penalty kill was funny, did they have coaches in this tournament? Anyway, it's not a very important title to my mind, but hopefully we at least will play the rest of the games with something resembling traditional Finnish cohesive and tactical hockey... Not holding my breath though :)

Idk how Marttila still gets to coach these teams. He is just not good enough.
He’s an awful coach in both, in having a well structured puck controlling game system and in firing up his players to play the best game they can play. What saved Finland today was that Canada had a coach that is even way worse in coaching than Marttila - even how unbelievable that seems to me.

Yeah Canada lost the game on their own, never seen such a bad PK from team Canada.
