Everyone admits the size and athleticism, but then seem to have a lot of completely unsubstantiated comments about his IQ, as it happens.

I think PB has a point.
You dont think it has more to do with him being one of the very few 2nd overall picks to not make the NHL while also having these incredible tools and endless poo international competitions?

Fact is that it's not normal for a 2nd overall pick and thats likely where the cristism comes from instead of race.

I havent seen him in the AHL this season except parts of one game so no idea how hes done since the WJC.

14 points in 20 games. Tied for team lead in points. One of the youngest players in the AHL.

Yes I can read a stat lim I meant I'm not going to comment on his play.

Just pointing out why many had cristism that doesnt stem from racism like some posters like to think.

Hard to quantify honestly. I’m sure there are those out there who judge him based on race.

LA is trying to do right by him. He may never be as electric as Stutzle but he could be a key cog towards contention again.

The thing that bothers me are the unsubstantiated claims of poor hockey IQ/ doesn't read the game well. If people just said they were disappointed/upset that he wasn't in the NHL I'd get it(I'd disagree because he was always known as a bit more raw than Laf and Stu, but id get it). Instead they criticize something that really cant be measured even when he's playing well

At the end of the day, hockey sense is the most important aspect of the game at a high level, so if a player isn't great at processing the game, it is a fair and important criticism to make. In Byfield's case, I have found his hockey sense to be his weakness ever since the U17, and nothing I've seen from him has made me change my mind. It does not mean that he will not be able to be a solid center at the NHL level, but it is what it is.

I think a lot of those comments came after he had multiple poor performances when the skill level of tHe competition was higher at international events before he didn't make the NHL as well. If he's been very good in the AHL then some of that should have subsided though.

Criticizing his play on bigger stages is fair and warranted, but wouldn't it be more apt to say something like he doesn't handle pressure well? Why is the fallback critique the nebulous and immeasurable concept of hockey IQ? that's my issue, not necessarily with you but in general

As a ducks fan I find myself rooting for him and turcotte because of how whiny and critical some of the kings fans are about these two.

I haven't seen any Kings fans doing that. Why would they? They've been overwhelmingly defending their two prospects against fans of other teams criticizing them. For example, the main poster criticizing Turcotte the other day in his thread is an Oilers fan.

I think it can be measured to an extent. His timing and decision making looked slow when he was given less space with better players. Some people just lump that into a generic "hockey IQ" territory.

Because hockey IQ is directly tied to how quickly you handle pressure. For any player, it's rarely that specific. Quinton has the potential to be the best player in the league. That is just a very rare outcome. I hope he proves my assessment wrong, he's a local kid who works his ass off. I'm just judging him on the OHL player I've seen.

I've seen tons on the kings board unless those were trolls from other teams.

I think people equate dominance with hockey iq in his case. I think he has done what is asked of him. Kings will try to make him a complete player in all aspects.
I've seen that a ton throughout all levels of hockey. The iq shines when talent levels even out.

That’s not a fact like you imply. Thats your opinion.

You got to stop criticizing him about his endless poo international competitions. Where a large group of people think otherwise, that it certainly wasnt that bad. There are just a few here who come up with this, including you, but it means *****. Positively or negatively.

Exactly what I said back then.

I find it's just another way for many posters to interject "but I didn't like his WJC" no matter what kind of things have transpired since.

The prefix is "I haven't watched him, but...."

Pick a suffix:

"I didn't like his WJC."
"He hasn't had the literal best 18 year old AHL season ever."
"He's not in the NHL like a normal #2 OA."
Abstract criticism grab bag du jour: "His hockey IQ/intangibles/drive/work ethic/character/x suck."

Rinse, repeat in three months from the same roster of posters.

Fact is, there's been some real, and immense, growth in the last few weeks now that the whole roster is acclimating to pro hockey, and Byfield is literally leading the charge. That's gonna shake up the whole tree full of outdated opinions.

Im pretty sure I recall reading that he wont be NHL ready before the Draft even took place
Maybe more 1st and 2nd overalls should get sent down. last few years has there really been anyone like McDavid, Eichel or Matthews?
We have grown to expect these kids to make an impact straight out of the gate but its just not that realistic anymore
NHL has been trending into a smaller, faster more skilled league. most kids 1st, 2nd or 3rd overalls will likely need time to develop.

It's not an opinion its a fact that almost every single 2nd overall pick forward makes the NHL in their D+1. I believe since 2000 the only ones not to play in the NHL (unless it was their own choice) are Bobby Ryan and Jason Spezza.

You can also keep saying his performances were good internationally, but again for a top 2 talent no they certainly haven't been and theres been plenty of info to back that up.

It certainly isnt racism like a couple posters like to keep saying

I don't disagree, just pointing out why some may be more critical and it's not due to racism.
