Where else would he play in the lineup? The lines are set, the only guy he could probably overtake is Vesey but Vesey had an insane first game
Howden has been quietly really good though, he made a ton of good defensive plays in his first game

Spooner-Chytil-Zuccarello
Howden-Hayes-Fast
Vesey-Holland/Nieves-Namestnikov

It works but we’d have to wait until Vesey starts sucking again and I’d prefer to develop Howden as a C, management most likely feels the same way

Vesey's "great" game he was so great he couldn't even register any points. He should be closer to being out of the lineup than the second line.

I'm only giving my opinion on what it should look like. Not saying it'll happen, but this insistence on playing rookie centers at center right away is why we have Howden on the fourth line with an AHL enforcer and a 13th forward and Andersson in the AHL.

I'm glad to see him make the NHL but hoping he won't have to log too many minutes with McLeod. A 4th line with Vesey and Lettieri on his wings would be sufficient.

Nemestikov-Howden-Lettieri is decent line combo, but can’t blame the coach for benching Nemestikov after a slow camp and first game. But if Howden only gets to 12 min a night we might want to send him down for some games in Hartford.

He's been really good so far this season. Earned himself more minutes, and his upside is better than I thought. For a rookie, he's doing a great job defensively and on face offs. He skates well and can create scoring chances. He gets to the net, and has played well so far with a number of different line mates. Smart player, as well. His skill is not overwhelming, but its good enough to at least be middle six, in my opinion. I think he's looked like a player who could maybe be a second line center in the NHL eventually. Too early to tell for sure, but he's been the biggest surprise on the team so far this season.

Very similar to my thoughts. Has played very well, but I don't see him developing into more than a 2C, which is perfectly fine, of course.

If Howden turns into a mid 6 forward, Hajek a Top 4 D and Lundkvist an nhl dman does this change the opinion of many here who thought that the lightning bent the rangers over in the McD trade?

Yes. We could also get a 2nd for Namestnikov and we still have that conditional 2nd (would be a 1st if they win the cup) that Tampa gave us. I wouldn’t have given McDonagh or Miller those contracts so I’d say it’s a pretty fair trade. Hajek is looking like a stud so far and we all know how good Howden is doing

No. The two best players from the trade would probably still be the ones we traded.

Unless you think McD and JT were dramatically better than they actually were then yeah that would make the trade a whole lot better. The trade was honestly fine as is, McD isn't that good and JT isnt dramatically better than Name (although he's definitely better)

Even so, it would change the narrative from the idea of the trade being a fleecing. It's too early to count returns anyway.

If anything, this was a quality for quantity trade between teams going in differnet directions, though some of that quantity may turn out to be pretty decent quality.

Tampa got the better players overall, but we have the possibility of a 2nd line center, a top-4 d-man, and a top-6 d-man, plus whatever comes of the 2nd and if we decide to move Namestnikov. And, of course, it remains to be seen how it works out for each side.

Both Howden and Hajek are pretty safe to turn into regular NHL talent. It was a rebuilding trade for the Rangers, and they have two players to assist in filling out their roster.

I have doubts that Howden will ever be an impact player, but Hajek has oodles of upside. I think the criticism of the Rangers was they didn't get that safe, top 6/top 4 piece, but rather a couple of mystery boxes for a low-end #1 and a top 6 player. Whether that criticism is warranted - kind of depends as to what the top end of the market would have been.

I have to say - having EK on the trading block at the same time (despite not getting done) really screwed up the best shot for the Rangers to get a huge payday. at 2:59 you have to make the best deal on the table, and I think the Rangers likely did that. But if EK wasn't on the block, they likely could have pulled more (especially since - considering reports + how much they paid for Tatar, VGK was looking to move some pieces for some help, but they were stuck on the phone with Dorion most likely).
