Buchenvich is under contract through next year. Armstrong has stated he wants to build around Thomas, Kyrou, Neighbors and the next wave, Bolduc, Dean, Snuggerud, Dvorsky, Stenberg, Lindstein, Kessel Etc.

The priority is a top 4 pairing defensive prospect or player that fits this timeline. Draft capital is the other goal for the Blues. That being said if a great center prospect or a great wing prospect is put into a package with picks it could still happen.

Things that I doubt happen would be retention beyond the remainder of this season. Remember Buch has another year at $5.8. This franchise has not retained salary beyond current year in its history. Last year was the first year they ever retained salary with O'Reilly and Tarasenko.

Buchnevich would be resigned today if he was 3 years younger. He is exactly what you want on your top line. Rebuild, retool whatever he will be missed immediately by the Blues. Physical, worker with great hands and a true knack for scoring. He is a guy who would score 10+ goals on a long cup run.

So this is what it would take.

1st pick in the 2024 draft

+

1st round pick in the 2025 draft or a bonafide top 4 pairing D prospect with pedigree (right size, top 40 pick projecting as an NHL stud)

If this is not offered they will keep Pavel and look to move him this summer at the draft or at the 2025 deadline as a pure rental.

I'm told 1st plus Holloway plus lesser prospect is kind of the bench mark. Something Blues fans won't like to hear.

It is funny because usually the sellers are disappointed with the returns

Last year, 22 year old late 2nd round pick Alexandrov had a better AHL and NHL season than Holloway, and he's just a dime a dozen 4th liner. Holloway is not progressing like he'll be more than a stock standard bottom 6 player. That's not the sort of player that should be a center piece in a trade for a player of Buch's caliber.
You need to understand how Edmonton's farm team works. They put young players with high offensive skills in roles to work on other parts of their game. They know they have skill with the puck. That's why you see guys like Griffith, Caguilla and Pederson getting 1st line and 1PP minutes.

Hollowway is a C/LW. Not going to get much of a chance in Edmonton with McDavid, Draisaitl, RNH, and Kane in the top 6.

Same with defense for Broberg. No injuries plus Nurse, Ekholm and Kulak locking up the LHD position. His 10 games this year was under Woodcrafts stupid 11F/7D system splitting minutes with Desharnais on the bottom pairing right side.

The Oilers traded a 1st, Reid Schaeffer(2022 32nd OA), and Tyson Barrie(2 years left) for Ekholm last year with 250k rentention.

A deal similar to that is my guess if the Oilers are going to do it.

Yeah thats a solid no. It was mentioned broberg holloway 1st 2024. Pognata stated that and he said he could see several teams beating that.

That package keeps Buch in a Blues jersey and gives all of us diarrhea.

Oooh, "I'm told." You do realize that this makes the Blues worse in the present and potentially in the future as well? A late 1st doesn't do a whole lot to change the trajectory of the Blues' future.

They'd much rather hold on Buchnevich through the offseason and try to work out an extension or another deal. Buch extended is worth far more than the package you just pulled out of your ass.

Feels like this is the ole classic really good player with 2 years left and the GM won't trade him until next year at the earliest to save face with the locker room. He'd get an absurd package if he moves

You can definitely keep Buchnevich at the price some are throwing around in this thread.

Aging player who will be 29 by playoff time, big cap hit next season and he is a player who rarely plays a full season……see how easy it is to make a player sound like junk….

In all seriousness, he gets moved next spring. Too valuable to the Blues and no contender can afford to pay the price.

I think you are on the right path with 2 firsts as an option & then throwing Broberg & probably something else in. It is reasonable offer. Now the Blues G.M. might want something more developed & further down the path to playing in the NHL sooner & that is understandable too. Or the Blues can take the draft picks & trade for something else they like.

His value to the Blues is muted because the team blows and won’t start creeping back into contender status for at least 2-3 years. If he’s indicated to his representatives that he wants to the test the market summer of 2025 OR the blues have decided they are not going to commit the required $/term to realistically keep him then they should def. move him before 3/8 to maximize his value. The Blues traded several first round picks during their Cup-competing window from 2013-2019. There is an aggressive GM out there who should make a move for Buch. He’s def a guy who could tip the scales and help a team win a playoff series bc of his completeness as a player.

His value to the Blues right now are marginal at best.

The team is very, very far from contending. And he is at an age where when we are ready, he would no longer be in the core group any more.

If there is a decent offer out there, Army probably would take it.
