Bridgeport 5, Providence 4, third period
Goals-Pelech (1,SH), Mayfield (1), Quine (1),Petrov (1), Johnston (1)
Goalies-Gibson, 6 saves, 8 shots (first period)
Williams

I wonder if we have something in Johnston. Not only is he huge and can fight, but he seems to have some talent as well. I remember being impressed in one preseason game with his skating for such a large man. I wonder if he'll be a Martin type 4th line player who can score some as well as protect teammates.

Nice to see Petrov score, he won't be down there all season, I'm sure of that, too good a player.

Johnston was the game's first star.

Johnston has enough talent to supplant a player on the big club's fourth line in the future BUT he also needs to remember why the Islanders signed him. He was one of the most feared fighters in the Q last two years. He has enough of a game that he's not one dimensional but fighting is what got him a chance and without it he won't have much of a career.

So, what happened to Gibson? Seems weird that he'd be pulled after two goals. Was he injured?

I was in Providence tonight for the game. Wild start to it. Halmo came up high with an elbow and put Providence on the PP one minute into the game. Pelech takes a shorthanded shot and everyone thought it hit the outside of the net. So they play another two minutes until the stoppage. Then they review the shot and find out that it was actually a goal.

After that, it was pretty chippy all night. Providence guys were going hard into Gibson repeatedly. Finally on I think the third run they injured him pretty good. He was wincing in pain on the ice (looked like a knee injury) but he played through to the end of the period. Then Williams came in to start the second period. Mayfield immediately got some revenge by crosschecking Vertana (sp?) in the back. Unfortunately that one bit us on the ass as Vertana scored on the PP.

The rest of the game was back and forth with each team getting lots of chances. Here's my take on our prospects:

Mayfield is really becoming a solid defensive defenseman. He's got a pretty good shot too and he let one rip for a goal in the 1st period. He obviously enjoys the physical side of the game and he is not shy about taking guys out of the play. What I also liked was that he is developing a really nice poke-check in his own end which comes with his improved skating and gap control. He broke up at least three rushes by standing tall at his blue line and poking the puck away. He also loves to scrum. Maybe a little too much as he got called on a couple of penalties.

Pulock. This guy has all the tools to be a true #1. Good skater, great hockey IQ, creative passes, and, as we know, wicked good shot. That said, he is still developing. He didn't make any major gaffes, but you could see that he was still reacting to the play and he was hesitant at times in his own end. He's an offensive specialist at the moment, but he is still pretty good in his own end, at one point he tracked down a guy on a near breakaway and pushed him right out of the play. Give him some time and I think the sky is the limit. Hopefully he keeps getting big minutes in the AHL. I do not want to see him don the Straitjacket any time soon.

Collberg. He had some flashes tonight. Made a few runs up the ice with the puck and you could see that he has some good skills. But he disappears for long stretches. Still very much a work in progress.

Quinne. Much improved over last season. He still benefits a lot from the powerplay, but he seems to be driving the play a bit more this season and he looked good in the faceoff circle. Good shot too. He'll be intersting to follow.

Petrov. I'm having a hard time figuring him out. Skill-wise he is clearly a cut above the rest of the forwards. But he, like Collberg, tends to be invisible for large stretches. Maybe he's still getting used to the small NA ice. I don't know. He did get a bit physical in the third period and you could see he has the size to be a power forward, but at the moment he is not playing that game. Mostly he is a powerplay specialist with some flashes at even strength.

Finn looked shaky early. At one point it looked like he just threw his stick at someone, and another time he just fell on his ass for no apparent reason. He got better as the game went on though and he got some powerplay time towards the end. It may just be a confidence thing with him.

BPT scored a late goal for the win. Still undefeated this year!:yo:

Nice report Charlie-Sounds like Mayfiekd is getting close, we could use that kind of player defensively. Don't think we'll ever see much offense from him but that's OK. Always been a fan of Pelech.

Bridgeport wins again, 3-1. Williams stopping 30 out of 31 shots. He's posting Sorokin type numbers in the AHL. 2-0 with a 1.50 ga and .949 sp. Pulock with the game winner and Pelech scores the 3rd goal. Not sure if Pelech's goal was an empty netter or not.

Pelech goal was an short-handed empty netter! Petrov was sent to the box with 48 seconds left.

BPoRt looking good his year. Williams is getting me excited.

Yeah you have to be excited about Williams. He's dominated in the AHL so far. Psyched about him, Sorokin and McAdam, all 3 goalies 6'2"+ and athletic with good lateral movement and gloves. All have work to do, but it's quite exciting knowing we have these guys in the prospect cupboard in a few years they will be Islanders.

Do the Islanders still own the rights of Koskinen?
