Is this over now that the first round is done?

Likely not because he has 1 yr left then UFA so then some teams wait to July 1 to find out what his contract extension ask is.

there is still a lot of cap uncertainty for 24/25 season teams need to be careful.

This is the type of guy and position WPG needs… so, very unlikely Chevy gets involved…too many bottom 6 LW in the dumpster holding his focus

You're trading a year of his contract and negotiation rights, and Carolina fans won't accept that. If it's a sign and trade, then his value may go up. But if the guy is demanding prices UFA' will get on July 1, that's not going to get Carolina much more. Probably worth an A- prospect and a 2nd rounder. Unless he took some friendly contract, and that is not happening. He will want eight years and demand whatever top D are getting in this year's free agent class. And he's not a top 2 D.

If Pesce comes with 8x$6.5, Sabres offer Olofsson at half retention ($2.375) & Ostlund & Rosen. How close is that and what other team beats that offer? I think it's too much personally as a Sabres fan but I won't break things if that works.

If one of Benson/Krebs/Savoie/Kulich/Quinn/Peterka have to be a part of the trade then I would prefer to look elsewhere for a Power partner.

If he's taking a friendly contract, he's staying in Raleigh. The Canes will trade him for a good return only - there is no fear of treating him like an own rental given our current roster and cap situation.

I wonder if there's a bigger move in the works? Since Karlsson has recently been linked to Carolina and Pesce to Edmonton

To Carolina: Erik Karlsson(4 years 8m)
To Edmonton: Brett Pesce(1 year 4.025m)
To San Jose: ????

You can keep Olofsson and just give us a 2nd instead.

Karlsson has 4 years left and he's already 33/34? Yikes.

Pesce has led the Canes in EV ice time per game in the playoffs since 2021. The team has been able to afford Slavin in a babysitter role because Pesce can handle top matchups. That says it all to me. Say what you want about what he’s going to be in a few years, but he’s been top pairing caliber in his prime.

That’s why I don’t have much interest in him.

It also allows Brind'amour the luxury that he doesn't have to babysit matchups, whether you put your top guys against Slavin-whoever and Pesce-Skjei.

If I'm Edmonton I overpay and try and convince him to sign later.

I dont see us being fortunate enough to convince him of a sign and trade. If he was willing to sign he would likely just stay in Carolina.

From the Sabres, same type of offer which some Canes fans were interested in, pre-draft:

2024 1st
Isak Rosen
Choice of Jokiharju or Lyubushkin

Sabres can throw in Olofsson (50%) retention if that helps fill out the Canes lines in some way.

Not sure which Canes fans you're referencing, but don't know anybody who's interested in Rosen. The prospect I'd be interested in given this scenario would be Kulich. So pick plus prospect and maybe a roster defender. And frankly, I realize that you guys don't want to give up Kulich and that's fine. But that would be what I'd ask for.

I'm guessing there are enough cash strapped teams who would relish the low salary this year and realize that they'd have to extend Pesce. In the end, I'd be more inclined to use him as an own rental.

If so, Rosen is a more complete player than Kulich and probably more suited to RBA system. He is definitely underestimated, but he is a very decent prospect who works well in all three areas and can score goals.

Name a defensive defenceman with a year left on his deal..soon to be 30 yr old who has brought back a prospect as good as Kulich

Sabres aren't trading Kulich.

If Carolina *has* to trade Pesce, Adams will want Pesce signed. 7x7 seems fair as far as market value, and Ostlund/Rosen will probably be the best offer you get from Buffalo.

This is a good offer IMO value wise - but i also understand why Carolina fans wouldn't necessarily like it - because their probable intention would be to flip one/both of Rosen/Ostlund for more immediate help.

I don't class those other guys as 'untouchables' - and i don't think we come close to finding as good a partner for Power elsewhere.

I'd go as far as offering Peterka straight up for example. But i wouldn't be adding any other high value pieces. I'd actually argue that the package you're offering here (Rosen AND Ostlund) is more valuable in a vacuum. But for reasons mentioned above - Carolina may prefer one piece who could contribute sooner as opposed to two who could contribute later.

I would definitely not trade Pesce and one of our best prospects to return Karlsson with just 30% retention.

This is terrible for the canes.
No, it's actually a rather good deal. I didn't name the + coming back as part of the deal from Buffalo. No doubt one of their forward prospects.

The whole thread is based on the premise of Pesce being traded
