Honestly I was impressed with Treliving from his press conference and have grown to like the hire.

Not too long ago, I mentioned we need to focus on improving our defence this off season. Got called out for it here because apparently our defence wasn’t the issue. But watching Giordano and Holl mainly in these playoffs was a disaster on top of Brodie’s regression and lack of aggression.

Treliving has a couple good pieces to work with in Rielly, McCabe and Liljegren. I’m excited to see who he trades away and for.

I wouldn’t mind adding Schenn to those three names above but the other two spots then NEED to be upgrades on what we currently have.

Our defensive metrics are helped by one of the best defensive forward groups in the league.

We need big physical D man who can separate man and puck and clear the slot. Simple as that.

I am happy to hear we will focus on a goalie out approach.

Can Treliving finally get Rielly his first true partner since Ron Hainsey?? God I truly hope he can.
He seems to really value having quality dmen that have size and snarl, almost a prerequisite in the playoffs.
I think our D core needs a major overhaul. Something DubASS never put any attension to. At least Tre puts an emphasis on that

Puck movement and transition was an issue on the back end as well

You do not find Ekblads, Petros, Theordores, Montours at Value Village. Shanny inherited Rielly and has not developed another top pairing dman in 9 years. The Sabres have Dahlin and Power and are closing the gap.
Well montour was a third round pick cost

We just need to shift and dig in and look for trades and be better at identifying players

Like that glorious dubas did with hyman that was a genius moment never to be repeated again..

I am genuinely curious... how?

Murray contract (one year) and Tavares (overpaid by 2 million and for 2 years) are the only bad contracts.

ELCs coming in now (finally), have to re-sign the core like Dubas had to... how is this situation worse?

There is so much flexibility with this roster over the next few years.
I think the term flexibility gets used too much around here.. and almost in my opinion incorrectly

Like every year the cap space has to go to the grunts you have to fill out the roster because of the salary structure.. there is always limited money to do this.

Flexibility is having a roster with continuity.. lots of players on term co tracts every year but due to how the contracts are timed it allows you make proactive decisions of which good player to can asset manage and which good player you keep.

I dont understand how having some money to use on filling out a roster every year is flexibility.. its just a rotation.. or cycle. It isnt like we can go after that key ufa due to flexibility

Rather than continuing to be cryptic about it, I have a suspicion that BT was signalling that Nylander is the available player. The guy's a 40 goal scorer and looks like he's going to continue being that. We know he doesn't have a full no movement next season but the truth is that the summer is when to make the big deals. Full payrolls during the season greatly complicate these deals at any other time of the year. Somehow turning Nylander into some form of a defense stud under the age of 27 would be the most ideal situation. I don't even know if that's possible because who would be available? That's for the GM to find out.

Also Brodie has served the team well and still has value as a trade asset.

Some of these guys are revealing themselves for what they are and always were. They don't care about the future fortunes of our team, never did, they only care about the right people with the right ideas controlling this team's future. If the right person is in control, they would defend him sending the team dressed as clowns out on the ice.
Thrir negotiating tactics and team results say it all...me,me,me...

Are you just forgetting about Brodie or something? He's much better than Hainsey ever was
I liked Hainsey. He played great for PIT on their cup run. Say what you want about him, but he did compliment Rielly very well. It's not his fault that he was played every single second of TOR's PK.

I'm not taking anything away from Brodie. He's great too.

I rather trade Marner. You probably get more value for him too

Still not sure what to make of all this.

Not a Dubas fan at all, and kind of glad he was let go, but I'm not a fan of Shanahan sticking around either. Especially if he's already told the Big 4 that they're not going anywhere. So, we changed GM's, but the Core 4 are staying and so is Keefe ?

With Treliving I expect him to find ways to improve our defence, even though I don't think defence was our biggest issue, but admittedly worried about everything else. While I don't blame him for trading Fox and Tkachuk (both wouldn't sign with Calgary, and IIRC Fox didn't even want to sign with Carolina either), but a lot of bad moves were made in Calgary.

I guess I will just have to take a wait and see approach, not much else I can do...
I honestly thing that Shanny said that about the core 4 to calm the fans down. TOR obviously wants to compete for the cup again. You don't do that by trading every single good player. JT is a contract that will likely never move. You want to re-sign Matthews. We have zero centers in our system that can compete like Matthews. As for MM and WN...who knows? Something will have to give because AM will likely want a raise. Giving Matthews a raise will mean someone else will have to go. Rounding out this team should be their priority. We also have Knies to look forward to. He's very good and can really help this team on LW.

So are the Dubas Robots on the PIT board now? Are they talking about expected goals over there now?

Forsling was a waiver claim...

When Dubas first became gm i expected him to find these type of players/reclamation projects but that never happened... Best we got was holl.

I don't quite understand the panic. Didn't we finish near the top in goals against in the regular season? Can't be all the forwards making the D look good is it? I keep on seeing the likes of Nylander always being bashed because he plays no D. Holl was terrible ...Kerfoot was a bum. Our goaltending was a mess according to some.

I guess Mathews and Tavares became Bob Gainey :)

I know I harped on this before. But how can a team play by one set of rules in the regular season and then have to adapt to different rules in playoffs. ?

No other sport does this

So at the trade deadline....we have to throw away assets to get a few slow tough defenceman that can cross check with the best of them and know how to interfere and do the ole clutch and grab that during the regular season is a penalty but in playoffs .....its called "heart"

Hasn't our team become slower? What did ROR do ? Fans loved the move because years ago he was MVP during the playoffs but we spent a 1st on a rental and he flamed out just like Folingo and others because they are just too slow and past their prime.

ROR couldn't play with Tavares as the line was as slow as molasses and couldn't drive his own 3rd line. Do we again go to the same well and trade assets for another slow over hyped player because he supposedly tough? I saw Holl fight....I saw some pushback from Nylander in playoffs....I didnt see ROR stick up for anyone or cause any kind of havoc. Did you see any?

Now I hear names like Anderson....Toffoli names throw around. Big guys that can score but are horrendous defensively and slow....Is that what we really want in our top 6?

I actually think we will be fine. Our stars will sign. Yes Tavares 11 mil contract hurts but we can still manage because we have some young kids that can play. I’m not sure trading Marner or Nylander is the answer....guess it depends on the return.

We still have a very good team. Like other teams with stars....takes time and luck to win a cup and get over the hump. Hot goalie would help as we seen this year and in past years how a goalie can take you far in playoffs. Will Woll be that guy for us? Hopefully so

Go look up how many points JT had last year. He's not an 11m player but it's not like completely useless.
Yes agreed but a solid scoring 2nd/3rd line LWer who can't cover a 200 foot ice game is worth what 4-5M maybe? I am not exactly sure but a top end 2C like Cirelli makes 6.2M AAV .. it is really da biggest impact on our CAP and causes/forces team to make other changes like Mitch or Willy to build a playoff team

It would take some pressure off if we could instill a system that can translate to the rule changing boogeyman of the post season.. thats a start

Reading between some lines - Shanny says they spoke to the core 4 expressing the intent that they want to keep them.

But are we talking about the core 4 forwards? Or does it include Rielly? He’s very much apart of that group. That could exclude someone like Nylander, who is the most likely trade candidate.

In the event that it is the 4 core forward and with Trev indicating that his focus is defense, maybe he’ll shake up the blue line and trade Rielly?

Mo is the only guy signed long term on this roster so it would be ignorant to not include him as a core piece.

I wouldn’t read too deeply into the wording and intentions of Shanahan as a handcuff on Treliving. Sounds like the biggest mission here is to get Matthews on board and everything will fall into place. So project stability in a moment of flux and then take it from there.

Shanahan’s supposed guarantee to the Core 4 has already outlived Dubas’ “Toronto or nowhere” so things are fluid.

I don't actually mind Rielly-Schenn for a top-4 pairing next year. Just need to bring in a good name on D to complete another good top-4 pairing and all of a sudden the D is starting to look solid.

I'm thinking you can trade the last year of Brodie to help this acquisition. I don't mind McCabe but I think he will function best as the complimentary guy on a pairing.

I think him and lilly as third pairing would be fantastic

Rielly-Schenn is a great pairing, you got physical play and the transition game, and you can start them in either zone. Mccabe-Lil is like a pared down version of that pairing, you also got physical and transition play and given enough time I think the two will gel.

Which leaves Gio-Brodie. As great as that pairing was 4 years ago, now it's a soft, slow pairing that will have trouble getting the puck out. Would be great to upgrade that one.
