Maybe it was only lip service by BT but to hear the buzzwords "fly-bys" and "let-ups" should signal an actual philosophical shift in the organization. Are there any current players who can't flourish in such environment? I can only think of one and I can't even be sure about that. Maybe he just hasn't been asked to not do the fly-bys.

As for the team's most important asset, Matthews, he has grown as a physically competitive forward over the years. He really is the most instinctively competitive of our star forwards. As Kypreos (I think) said, he doesn't appear to have ever been taught how to throw a body check properly. Everything in this area appears to be self-taught. And that scrum/fight thing with Stamkos in the past playoffs was horrifying. Something terrible came very close to happening there. Matthews fell dangerously at the end of it and fortunately didn't tear up his knee or something. Clearly Matthews was enjoying himself but this seemed all new to him. In the past guys would horse around on the practice ice in mock scrums just to get used to the one on one wrestle balance thing with other guys about as strong. It was a preparation for something that was a matter of self-preservation for even the cleanest of players.

It would be a good move to move Brodie sooner than later. We need more size, muscle and nastiness on D.
Also Brodie has served the team well and still has value as a trade asset.
Funny that Siegal who was one of the biggest defenders of the massive medium term Matthews/Marner contracts, and who year after year kept pounding the drum about keeping the core four and tinkering around the edges, all of a sudden believes big changes should be made.

Where was this article suggesting Dubas should be making big changes after the Columbus loss? After the Montreal loss?
Some of these guys are revealing themselves for what they are and always were. They don't care about the future fortunes of our team, never did, they only care about the right people with the right ideas controlling this team's future. If the right person is in control, they would defend him sending the team dressed as clowns out on the ice.

It seems fans have been asking for the D to be built better, but it would seem one of the Core Four has to be used to do so..............the new GM is not thinking any differently than many fans.
Can it be done without a big trade to one of the Four?

Dubas tried, and couldn't figure it out...........
I mean, Dubas got Muzzin, Brodie, McCabe, Giordano, and Schenn.

McCabe, and Brodie are quality 2nd pairing guys. Muzzin was a #2. Giordano was a 2nd pairing dman that ran out of gas and is now much better suited as a 3rd pairing guy. Schenn is a #4-6 that somehow played closer to a #2 or 3 in these playoffs.

Dubas brought in a lot of quality defenders. They just lost the best one to injury and 2 others either had an off 2nd half to the season due to injuries/overpaying or are running out of gas. McCabe played okay, but was a bit overwhelmed at times in his first playoffs. Schenn was phenomenal.

We had some defensive miscues this year that happened a lot more frequently than in the past due to the dmen not moving the puck quick enough along thr boards and I think it could've been a coaching decision to try and limit turnovers at the blueline... it ended up with us turning over the puck along the boards much more often which was not a good decision at all.

Maybe we send him to the Steel city along with Murray, and Jarnkrok. Wonder what Tree thinks about inheriting the guy he traded for at the TDL and let walk after watching him do nothing in the playoffs for the Flames.
We should have made that deal. Grant Pittsburgh permission to speak to Dubas and if you hire him you need to take Murray.

Jarnkrok seems like a perfect late season trade away candidate. He'll fill a role during the regular season, have his 14 goals and have some trade value at the trade deadline. When it comes down to it, Jarnkrok is the poster child of the Dubas era teams: nice high energy regular season forechecker but delivers nothing more in the NHL playoffs and therefore has a reduced impact in the playoffs.

You do not find Ekblads, Petros, Theordores, Montours at Value Village. Shanny inherited Rielly and has not developed another top pairing dman in 9 years. The Sabres have Dahlin and Power and are closing the gap.
Montour was a 2014 second round pick that both Anaheim and Buffalo tried to throw in the garbage and is now having his first good season 8 years into his career.

and Theodore was taken late in 2013 first round after we took one Freddy the Goat ... ugh

I like what I heard. He knows what needs to get done. I hope Shanny goes to the meeting with Matthews. Same with Larry. Gotta be united in this and get him to sign

Can Treliving finally get Rielly his first true partner since Ron Hainsey?? God I truly hope he can.
He seems to really value having quality dmen that have size and snarl, almost a prerequisite in the playoffs.

Just re-sign Schenn.

Rielly played some great hockey this playoffs and Schenn was a steadying force that played at a controlled pace and didn't make many mistakes.

Interesting that Treliving actually brought up Schenn's name in the press conference and said he's known him for awhile.

I mean really, you're over-thinking this my man. Everyone here wants the Leafs to win, and, it's just a message board. It's supposed to be fun. Winning HF is not the point at all. Trust me, I have been as deep down in here as anyone ever, maybe ULF and Mess excepted, maybe, but try to have fun, coming here to do battle is draining, not worth it.

Totally unrelated, but your name and profile picture always makes me think of Lalo from better call Saul.

After watching that Dubas presser on SportsCentre this morning, I’m glad he is gone. He is such a little dweeb
LOL Someone needs to hang this beak on a door hook - 1980s style.

I'd like to see the city of Toronto send Dubas this postcard.

A formidable defense, a steady goalie and a forward group completed with rookies and $1M aav free agents would be a better built playoff team than we've seen over the past 7 seasons.

I chose those 4 because they are in the SCF. There are other, better examples of the type of dman we lack.

You have to admit, aside from whatever kind of job you think your lord and saviour Dubas did with the team over the past 5 years...leaving all the core contracts to come up and have NTC kick in prior to being able to extend/trade is beyond mongoloid levels of idiotic.

Pretty common for high end players to get some form of NTC or NMC as soon as they are eligible contract wise

He certainly walks into a much more challenging gig than Dubas walked into.

I am genuinely curious... how?

Murray contract (one year) and Tavares (overpaid by 2 million and for 2 years) are the only bad contracts.

ELCs coming in now (finally), have to re-sign the core like Dubas had to... how is this situation worse?

There is so much flexibility with this roster over the next few years.
