I chose those 4 because they are in the SCF. There are other, better examples of the type of dman we lack.
agreed but those 2 in particular seemed easier to come by. In fact the leafs were in on Montour and everyone thought we dodge a bullet after how much of a disaster class he put on in Buffalo

Totally unrelated, but your name and profile picture always makes me think of Lalo from better call Saul.
Pretty damn close, it's the stache/hairline combo lol

I am genuinely curious... how?

Murray contract (one year) and Tavares (overpaid by 2 million and for 2 years) are the only bad contracts.

ELCs coming in now (finally), have to re-sign the core like Dubas had to... how is this situation worse?

There is so much flexibility with this roster over the next few years.
UFAs vs. RFAs. Duh da.

Are you just forgetting about Brodie or something? He's much better than Hainsey ever was
Brodie hasn't been a steady partner at all, if he was he'd have played with Mo in the playoffs instead of Schenn. Brodie was paired with McCabe after the deadline.

Rielly played with Liljegren for parts of the season too, he's never had a steady partner. Having Schenn there for a full season seems less than ideal.

Can Treliving finally get Rielly his first true partner since Ron Hainsey?? God I truly hope he can.
He seems to really value having quality dmen that have size and snarl, almost a prerequisite in the playoffs.
This X 100.

Right after Dubas inability to finalize our goaltending, and just before his maddening obsession with skill vs grit, his inability to bring in a bonafide true RHD for Rielly was one of my main frustrations with Dubas.

Being satisfied with bandaids like Brodie and Hainsey, losing McCann to keep Holl rather than bringing in a true RHD was a peculiar blindspot for Dubas. The status quo was never good enough.

Hoping Treliving addresses this properly. We've had glimpses of how good Rielly can be when he has a suitable and complimentary partner.

Now lets get full value from Rielly and make our team better.

Only 1 defenseman of power plays and OT, more extended breaks during games than ever. If I see any more 7-11's next season for anything other than a temporary injury situation, I may scream.

After watching that Dubas presser on SportsCentre this morning, I’m glad he is gone. He is such a little dweeb
The first thing Treliving did during his conference was thank everyone associated with the Flames organization. That little dweeb didn’t thank anyone in the Leaf organization during his conference yesterday. Not a classy move by someone who owes everything to the team that put their faith in him despite being raw. Already see the difference in class between Dubas and Treliving.

If you mean consistency instead of the quality of partner, that's just because the other options were Zaitsev or Ozhiganov. The right side of the defense was total garbage, not because Hainsey was anything special. Saying Brodie hasn't been a steady partner at all still doesn't make any sense, that was the most commonly used defense pairing for the Leafs two years in a row

I am not sure it makes it all that more difficult. People want cap space, sign them or trade them, cap is very, very, very valuable on these boards.

I'd rather that issue than the bad contracts Lou left.

Reading between some lines - Shanny says they spoke to the core 4 expressing the intent that they want to keep them.

But are we talking about the core 4 forwards? Or does it include Rielly? He’s very much apart of that group. That could exclude someone like Nylander, who is the most likely trade candidate.

In the event that it is the 4 core forward and with Trev indicating that his focus is defense, maybe he’ll shake up the blue line and trade Rielly?

Mo is the only guy signed long term on this roster so it would be ignorant to not include him as a core piece.

Pending UFAs with NMC. Dubas left Tree in a pretty sticky situation. Of course, it was something a genius can easily handle.

This is common around the league.

Also, the reason I am nervous with Treliving (hoping for the best) is because of how he left Calgary, there are teams in far worse shape.

Still not sure what to make of all this.

Not a Dubas fan at all, and kind of glad he was let go, but I'm not a fan of Shanahan sticking around either. Especially if he's already told the Big 4 that they're not going anywhere. So, we changed GM's, but the Core 4 are staying and so is Keefe ?

With Treliving I expect him to find ways to improve our defence, even though I don't think defence was our biggest issue, but admittedly worried about everything else. While I don't blame him for trading Fox and Tkachuk (both wouldn't sign with Calgary, and IIRC Fox didn't even want to sign with Carolina either), but a lot of bad moves were made in Calgary.

I guess I will just have to take a wait and see approach, not much else I can do...

The whole angling to become the de facto MLSE president fiasco undermining the very man who gave him the opportunity revealed a whole lot about him. You can have hard feelings about a situation but still express appreciation for the opportunity and resources.

It actually makes it easier. ELC -> Post-ELC requires a lot more clearing of space and fundamental changes to the team than RFA -> UFA, and who the player is and what can be expected is a lot more established. And unlike Lou, Dubas actually planned for their re-signings, and made sure the space would be available and there would be ELCs to supplement, instead of a drained prospect pool and cap tied up in sizable anchors.

Yeah, drafting superstars is super easy.
