Matthew Tkachuk, and Johnny Gaudreau just laugh. This move has desperation written all over it. So, who will the coach be.

Matthews and Nylander are gone.
At least he will get something for Nylander. AM, not so much.

Lou stopped being a 'good' GM his last few years with the Devils... after that, its reputation that keep him in employed as he signs bad contract after bad contract.
luckily for the Leafs, he's signing bad deals for the Isles now, and not Toronto.
Bizarre take for a guy who has had the success he has had....IMO

I don't envy his job coming in. His hands are all but tied due to the position Dubas has left the team in going forward. His biggest trade chips all have NMCs/NTCs kicking in very soon and he has a depleted draft pick and futures pool to work with.

Here's hoping he can make chicken salad out of chicken s***.

truly a disastrous situation. 110+ point team, 1st rounder this year, team full of guys who like playing for this team. Clearly it will take a miracle, hopefully brad is up to the task

So you’re going to throw a competitive season in our prime window, scare off all future UFAs, get investigated and fined by the NHLPA, all so you can have the privilege of paying Matthews 13 mil when he’s 35? It would be unacceptable for you to pay him that amount until he’s 32 instead, we really need those high paid 33-35 seasons from a guy with a chronic wrist issue who’s skating is starting to slow down.
If they were close I could see keeping him as a rental. But there’s so much to do and if he’s not committed they need to pressure him into accepting a trade.

Yes Shannahan hired the dude who had worked his entire professional career with Dubas

This is getting as bad as the Dubas chose Mitch Marner but Mark Hunter made every other pick trash
Elliotte Friedman on SN590: Much more likely than not Keefe will be the Leafs coach as of right now. Shanahan told prospective GM's that he was happy with Keefe and would like to keep him but ultimately GM's call. Very few candidates, if any, objected.

Throw it back to Shanahan then ...

They don’t even have a single contract paying a mid tier player big money and NMC until he’s 38 to carry them, this is gonna be a tough one to navigate with all that dang cap flexibility getting in the way.

Are you talking about the same “Players who want to stay” that can’t win more then 5 games in the playoffs every year and who are drastically overpaid for their accomplishments thus far?

I'm saying that's the most I'm comfortable with. I have my doubts about Matty so I even flinch at that. But it's tough to walk away from a dude like that you drafted if his head is in the right place.
13 is for 8 yrs.

Just out of curiosity… what is BT‘s history re: allowing leaks to the media or using a cone of silence ala Dubas… just want to know if we’re about to be buried in millions of “speculations” leading up to the draft.

yes, it's a better situation to have Auston Matthews want to stay then to have him wanting a trade, that should be obvious

8 years benefits Matthews and hurts us, how are you not understanding this? We do not want to be on the hook for 13 mil to a 35 year old center with injury issues, we’re much better off with a 4-6 year term at that money. If we don’t win in 4ish years we’re going to be in a rebuild anyway and will get much more in return selling a 30 year old Matthews than a 35 year old.

8 years or bust is quite literally the stupidest dealbreaker imaginable at this stage, it only makes sense on his 1st contract when those 8 years cover age 21-29 not 27-35.

This is exactly the reason why I didn't want Dubas fired in the first place, you replace a bad one with a better one instead of the same or even worse one. This team is going to be the clown fest starting on Friday.

 Treviling comes into a team whose worst contract to move is Matt Murray with a whopping 1 year left .. And Tavares' contract, if you want to nitpick, but even that just has 2 years left and a deal with retention is looking more feasible if needed.

Literally no longer-term handcuffs.

He has the ability to move 3 high-profile core players at the draft without restrictions, can re-sign two of those core players on July 1st as well.

There is a ton of flexibility here to reshape the roster .. while it's not as cushy has having elite talent on ELC's, it's an ideal re-tool scenario.

The biggest thing is the lack of draft picks available to sustain the prospect pool but the pool has some solid depth already which near-NHL ready contributors so it's not a glaring hole yet.

I’m sure Sutter is a huge dbag and pain to play for, but if a player wants 10m, they should be able to put points on the board even if the coach is literally the Babadook.
Sutter might be a tough coach to play for in this day and age, but calling him a d bag is uncalled for, guy’s won cups, I know in Toronto that don’t mean shit, but to the rest of the world it’s a badge of honour. He’s probably happier working the farm and wondering how this world has become butter soft.……….

He’s been through the same situation the leafs are in with the flames last year , Hopefully he learnt from his mistakes and thats what sold shanny. He’s done it , He’s failed. Maybe this is his shot at redemption and He will adapt from last time.
His trade History blows , But his draft history is impressive .

I’ll give him the opportunity come July 1st Matthees better be singed on traded.

Yeah, so what’s your point, you actually believe it’s Shanahan who didn’t want to fire Keefe and not Dubas? Oh boy, that’s a good one………
