I figured 8.5 would have been the discount steal of a lifetime that I never expected, I think this deal is fine.
Beyond Bruin fans, most of the comments are negative. He's far overpaid and will only get worse in time. Jones and Werenski played on a terrible team and their numbers were suppressed, but they still outscored McAvoy and played more games each season.
If you want to get technical, compare salaries based on age consider 24 and under DMen:
There is no justification for this salary for an often injured player.
- Werenski - $9.58M (starts 2022/23);
- McAvoy - $9.5M ;
- Makar - $9.0M;
- Heiskanen - $8.45M
- Chabot - $8.0M;
- QHughes - $7.85M;
- Provorov - $6.75M;
- Dahlin - $6.0M.
Bergeron’s wasn’t really a huge discount when he signed it and Marchand signed just before he really broke out. The Bruins got lucky there with the timing. McAvoys three year bridge has been severely underpaid, I guess he is making up for it with this extension.Franchise defenseman, perennial Norris candidate, you've gotta lock that down. He wouldn't give the discount that Bergeron/Marchand did, but you just have to admit he's worth it to anchor your defense.
In 8 years, $9.5 million will be nothing anyway.
5 games missed....LOL. You really bringing that up like it matters at f***ing all? It's clear you don't watch McAvoy, those of us who do know this deal is fair. Dude is an absolute stud and on of the best young defenders in the game.Really it isn't. Dude has never played a whole season due to injury and what not. Though it has been better the last 2 with 5 missed last season and I think 3-4 the one before but his first two seasons he missed a ton of games.
Can he be worth this contract, damn straight. Is it a sure thing? No. He basically got the same contract as Seth Jones without having done as much as Jones in the NHL and I am not even sure Jones is worth the deal he got.
Maybe watch him play more than. He's easily elite, it's not even up for debate.Wow, I like McAvoy but I don't think he's in the elite class. I viewed him as a 7 million a year guy, but I guess Boston needs the next wave of core players and he is one. He is just too injury prone but at least his extension starts when he is 24 and not like 29....
Uhh yes, he is better. Your opinions in the minority here buddy...Ya no he is not better but about even. He brings thing Jones doesn't and Jones brings thing he doesn't. He has also played his 4 year career on a much better team that Jones has most of his career.
He's really not often injured, like at all. You don't know jackshit about hockey, we get it.Beyond Bruin fans, most of the comments are negative. He's far overpaid and will only get worse in time. Jones and Werenski played on a terrible team and their numbers were suppressed, but they still outscored McAvoy and played more games each season.

You’ll find almost no one agreeing with you on this. Jones is a wreck in his own end.Ya no he is not better but about even. He brings thing Jones doesn't and Jones brings thing he doesn't. He has also played his 4 year career on a much better team that Jones has most of his career.
Dude, him being younger is a positive, not a negative. There are also very few negative comments. Also how the hell is it going to get WORSE as he ages and gets better while the cap goes up?Beyond Bruin fans, most of the comments are negative. He's far overpaid and will only get worse in time. Compared to recent signings yeah I’d agree it’s fair. I just still can’t get my head around how in a flat cap these signings have skyrocketed like this.Obviously there’s some sticker shock at 9.5 AAV but McAvoy is assuredly worth that. I’d take him before every other dman except Makar that signed this summer
8-10 is the new 6-8. Time for people to deal with it.
