Bruins don't do this often.

Thats a big commitment.

Like the kid, could be a bargain for a few years. Actually should be full term.

He's a better player than Quinn Hughes. He should get 8 years 8.5M or so
Apples and Oranges bro, McAvoy is one of the best defensive D men that has offensive abilities but his offensive abilities aren't as elite as the likes of Makar, Hughes, Hedman. His defensive abilities is definitely elite. In a PP i would take Hughes over McAvoy but in a PK I take McAvoy over Hughes. I think he deserves 8.5 million x 9 years so his deal now is 1 million over that. Hughes getting 7.8 million is also a fair deal. I also think young defensemen that signed this offseason over 9 million/year were all overpaid, especially Nurse. Makar and Fox are both deserving of 9 million per year. The only d man that deserves 9.5 million + is Hedman in this flat cap era.

Yeah, if they were the same player.. McAvoy plays Defense in his own end..
McAvoy is great defensively but he can't do anything close to what Hughes does on offense. Hughes plays like Fox or Makar in the offensive zone and being elite offensively should be one of the biggest factors in a defensemen getting big bucks. Otherwise Tanev deserves way more than 4 million as he is pretty elite defensively. I would say McAvoy should have gotten what Heiskenin got and not more and I think Heiskenin might be a bit better due to his skating.

People seem to overlook the fact that McAvoy hasn't had the chance of playing on the top PP unit until around the playoffs where he put up 12 points in 11 games in which 8 of those points were on the PP. You take away Makar and Fox's PP tallies and you get similar production as what McAvoy has put up throughout his first 4 seasons. Even strength these 3 (Makar, McAvoy, Fox) are extremely similar.

I subtracted all power play tallies from each of these defensemen. These are the even strength points they all put up last season. Makar played less games but still eerily similar nonetheless.

McAvoy w/ 22 EV points
Makar w/ 22 EV points
Fox 24 w/ EV points
Hedman w/ 21 EV points
Hughes w/ 22 EV points

The difference between most of these defensemen is that they have played on their respective top PP units where as McAvoy hasn't until he was given a shot in the playoffs which resulted in him becoming a PPG player.

Just puts into perspective how insanely overpaid Nurse is when even paying McAvoy this much can be considered to be a bit over.

It’s a fair contract although I thought they might get him for 8.5 or 9 million long term. It’s hard to say it’s an overpayment considering I’d take him over Hamilton, Nurse, or Jones. They also aren’t on the hook for those last 2-3 brutal years some teams get when they sign these guys at or close to 30. You have to make smart decisions when you decide who to pay. McAvoy is a guy you sign and Krug is the guy you let someone else overpay.

FYI, I’m a NYR fan so I have no rooting interest in Boston.

I'm not sure how "big" this contract really will be. Pelech and Pulock have kinda set a decent range for top-pairing, "defensive" defensemen.

I think McAvoy is elite, but he doesn't have the raw production to really be in the outer stratosphere of comparable defensemen contracts.

he scored at even strength last year at the same rate as Makar and Adam Fox, had significantly better defensive impact and played tough competition. This year he’s on pp1 bc the bruins stopped being stubborn about Lhd on their power play. He’s easily one of the 3 best d alive and you can make an argument that can be supported with data that he’s the best 5v5 player driver in hockey.

when jones, werenski and nurse signed their deals I was worried chuck would be 11m because he’s so much better than them. Thankfully he wants to be in Boston.

Jaccob Slavin makes almost half of this deal. And he's a better D-man. That's insane where the market has gone since.

I keep seeing posts like this. “He’s a better dman” about Slavin or heiskanen or Seth jones or Jeff f***ing petry. You guys have to show your work, there just isn’t a realistic argument to be made that that is true. Makar? Sure. Fox..maybe? That’s it

HOw many points does Charlie put up? I like him, but in a more defensive role, and that’s a lot for such a role.

Even strength he’s on par offensively with all the top offensive defensemen. If he can produce on the PP he could probably put up 50+ a season.
