Only concern I really have with this is that GMBA has very clearly been told that if we're taking back salary they have to make it well worth our while because we can't afford it unless that's the case.

The only thing bugging me is all the fluff by Gambo saying “a pick that could end up 6th”. Ottawa would have to take a serious nose dive in the standings to fall that far. Haha,
Technically only 3 teams would have to leapfrog them which isn't that ridiculous ;)

Two things that seem certain to me.

Meruello is broke or at least done spending real money on the team for this year. Maybe more than this year.

Armstrong overplayed his hand and was forced to take less. He is now stuck hoping the Sens fail and that his scouts are incredible. His early legacy with this team will be defined by this move and what happens from it over the next 3-4 years.

How would us winning Bedard be bad? OTT pick could be just below the ECF giving us the worst outcome that it doesn't turn into unprotected next year and I'd still be over the f***ing moon at drafting Bedard.
Yeah if the Coyotes landed Bedard, I could give two f***s about the rest of the picks in 23, 24 or 25. So much sorts itself out if Bedard ends up a Coyote. It just sucks how unlikely that is to actually happen thanks to the NHL's idiotic f***ing draft rules.

Ottawa is also tied with Nashville, Detroit, Washington, and 7/8 points ahead of STL, Montreal, and PHI. Good chance those teams which majority sold off stay around the same range.

Ottawa has the Isles, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, and Florida to leapfrog to get into the Wild Card, plus the aforementioned Detroit and Washington are tied with them and MTL and PHI aren't too far behind. It's going to be a hell of a road for them to get in. I actually think STL will bounce up in the standings after trading so many players and giving their young guys more time and I think NYI are definitely the team to beat with Horvat.
Ottawa won't make the playoffs. Still a pick in the 11-14 range is still not enough for a proven NHL Dman, young and on a good contract. All the other stuff is just that, stuff. This is a great deal for Ottawa.

GMBA perhaps getting potentially the highest first 2023 rounder traded this year. This could be fantastic.

However I am perplexed at the fact that he is leaving this pick destiny to the performance of a third party team.

This feels like a gambling.

I hope he is not addicted to drafting.

I've hated the lottery rules for years and they just keep making them WORSE it's like come on guys we don't need to jump through hoops here.

Yes top 10 gets this much closer to feeling like a good return. Hell top 12. But if OTT manages to make the playoffs then things get dicey
Ottawa I believe would pick 11th today. What happens if they win the lottery?

The rationalization around here is epic. This is a crap deal when everyone was talking 2 1sts or even 3 as late as yesterday. Price was too high for too long and it bit Armstrong in the ass.
I’ve been saying for MOST of the last 16 months that I expected the equivalent of two 25th overalls (ish) and on 55th overall (ish).

We’ll have to see where this ends up. It’s a gamble. And the odds are it ends up worse by about a 2nd rounder in value. It’s underwhelming.

And it seems that the reason it’s so bad is because the team has run out of money.

In the end it's easy for us to not care about money coming back in order to maximize assets, but we don't write the checks or balance the cap.

Which makes me wonder two things:
Could we be looking to retain on Schmaltz?
I can see them wanting more space to take dumps in the offseason than now. That's where that cap space is more valuable. Getting stuck with Zeitzev could easily make it so BA can't wheel and deal cap space this offseason.

What did we pay to convert a contender pick to 11th overall last draft?
We paid 28th, 34th, and 45th last year for the 11th pick. Which is basically 2 late firsts.

If the trade was with St. Louis for the Ranger's and Leaf's 1st and only one 2nd I feel the perception here would have been much better. Even though the actual value is potentially much less than what we received. A lot of people fail to grasp the historical fall off after the top half of the first round.

Initial return is not easy on the eyes but when you dig into it, you’re right.
BOS 1st ~ OTT 2nd, BOS 2nd < OTT 2nd, Lysell = or < OTT’s ‘23 1st. Hopefully they get a couple of the guys they’re coveting.
You guys are forgetting about LA. What happened there? We couldn't take on money? Or Columbus? Or what about Edmonton who wanted Chych but had to send us $$$.

After the top ten the draft turns into a bigger crap shoot than it already is.
Pay attention to what people have been saying about this draft. There are multiple players who are ranked or projected to be in the later half of the 1st or even in the 2nd that some people have been talking about as top 15 picks. There are probably like 10 guys that every scout has differently ranked. Some guys have ASP in the top 10. Some have him in the late 1st. Stramel is the same. Leonard. Dragicevic is ranked as the best D in the draft or a late 1st. I trust our scouts and they very clearly have their eyes on this draft. I don't blame them. I'm also super high on this draft. Think it's one of the best ones in history.

You guys also gotta remember that Ottawa is gambling on chychruns health too. For all we know he could get injured again and not play many games for Ottawa this year. It's all gotta be factored into the return

Pretty uneventful. Not what my expectations were. We also did not get what BA had been asking either.
