A normal cash flush rebuilding team would have eaten the Petersen contract and whatever else LA wanted for some incredibly stupid HF sexy return. That's kind of frustrating. But I feel better about this front office than any other, and trust their drafting ability.
Absolutely agree on all points. Couldn't have said it better

I’m hoping it’s directly correlated to them anticipating the arena deal getting approved. There will be a lot of money spent, if so.

Fingers crossed. I hate seeing all the promotion for the vote in May and knowing I can't vote because I don't live in Tempe.

I highly doubt BA is done with that retention spot. Two days left.

If OTT ends up 16th and wins the lottery the trade gets deferred, lol. Not trying to be an ass here Jakey, but you should try to know what you're talking about before you open your mouth buddy ;)

Second post. Gets deferred to next year, unprotected.
You sure about that post telling Jakey to know what he's talking about?

I would encourage everyone to try this out a few times drafting for both AZ and Ottawa in 1st round.

Actually try it drafting for AZ, Ottawa, LA, Toronto, and Boston and tell me how you feel about the players taken. How does that Ottawa pick (use the Sabres instead if u think it’s too high) feel and tell me how that comfort level changes as u get to the other picks.

Lotto luck sees the Coyotes walk off the draft stage with Bedard (1) and Michkov (6).

So this keeps going now until we see if Ottawa makes the playoffs and then if their pick ends up in the top 5. So for those of you saying you're just glad it's over...

Quick look at hockeprospect.com rankings.

11 OA Dvorsky
12 OA Cristal
13 OA Barlow
Dvorsky could be a steal at 11

Barlow is the top power forward.

I have concerns on Cristal’s skating. He is a close friend of Bedards though. Skill level is high.

It's more that pick 10 is historically worth 5x as much as pick 32. So the return is theoretically better than anything a serious contender was offering.

It's just not sexy the way a named prospect is, especially to HF and casual fans.

You can draft a Barzal level player and change the trajectory of your franchise. Nobody was offering that in trade.

These are great points.

Greig/Grans/Broberg/Lysell most of these names floating around will max out as great depth pieces, or middle of roster players. Unless EVERYTHING goes right these guys wont reach the potential that a top 12 player in this draft will have. They are mostly considered late 1st/early 2nd value wise. Of course that can happen to whoever we draft as well, but right now that potential prospect will have more value than all of those players for at least two seasons.

If we get a player who excels, or we can bundle our future picks to move up two spots to get someone we love or get into the top 10 this starts to look much better.

This 1st will be better than the LAK, BOS, EDM, CAR, TOR pick. And not just slightly better, but substantially better. This 1st is better than the 1sts we got back for Vermette, Yandle and Dvo.

I wish there were conditions on one of the 2nds though. Like if OTT makes the playoffs the 24 2nd becomes a 1st.

It's top 5 protected. So if Ottawa ends up 16th and win the lottery they move up to sixth. Who knows where Ottawa will be picking, but if the season ended today I believe it is around 11th, so yes if they won the lottery we would pick next year. I think that's how the lottery works.

@JasonDemersWasOkay im trying to talk myself off the ledge here and I’m bringing you with me.

Would you rather:

Have two guaranteed picks in the top 16 this year, a future 2nd, and another future 2nd that could become a 1st

Or

Have one pick top 10 this year, a pick in the 25-32 range this year, another future first round pick from a contending team, and a future 2nd

If ottawa finishes 16th and wins the lottery. They only move up to 6th which is not protected... or am I missing something.
