I would encourage everyone to try this out a few times drafting for both AZ and Ottawa in 1st round.

Actually try it drafting for AZ, Ottawa, LA, Toronto, and Boston and tell me how you feel about the players taken. How does that Ottawa pick (use the Sabres instead if u think it’s too high) feel and tell me how that comfort level changes as u get to the other picks.
Don’t do it. Don’t do it! Oh well, King Leo and Will Smith. That’s a dream, but there is a better chance than a contender first.

If ottawa finishes 16th and wins the lottery. They only move up to 6th which is not protected... or am I missing something.
I believe you are correct, but you should ask dv018, he seems to have all the answers.:sarcasm:

Who doesn’t? Please explain
AM does not have any money.

Covid killed his revenue stream from the Vegas casinos, and his professional sport team he owns is only playing in an arena that houses 4,800 people.

Do the math.

Also, there's a 2 billion dollar arena district he's going to have to pay for (assuming Tempe voters vote yes). He kinda needs the money for that than icing a future team, at the current moment.

Checking to see what percentage of 2023 1st rounders traded are top 5 protected or higher. I'm guessing most are top 10?

Having picks 6-10 in play to get a 2023 1st instead of a 2024 unprotected 1st is huge if you're buying the 2023 draft hype like me. I'm thinking the 1st litmus test for this trade is what Ottawa's 1st ends up being. Top 15 or higher 2023 and I'll give it a temporary passing grade. A lower 1st and I'll have to wait to see the selection, and if 2024 1st.... a temporary failure until a little over a year to reevaluate.

I just hope the pick isn't traded in a package to move up/down so we have a single asset to evaluate as the return for Ottawa's 1st (the prize of the Chychrun return), and I'd hope the other picks are used for a single asset. I want to know what 3 dynamic prospects we have every time I see Chychrun in a Senators Jersey.

Why are you here again? Just out of curiosity. You’re nothing but negative Nancy all the time. I just don’t get it.
I live here and been going to a ton of games for years. I just live in reality and have watched this organization bumblef--k their way around for a long time and don't get my hopes up anymore. (In my defense, I did say recently it appears they're headed in the right direction.) If you think it's negative, that's understandable. I won't even say you're wrong.

I've said all along the ask was too high and here we are. I'm sure not retaining played a factor too, but that just raises more concerns. And I can also understand looking at this as positively as possible, because it's done and there's nothing anyone can do about it. But man, can you imagine the flame job a Sens fan would've gotten here even yesterday if they'd popped in here and said "How about Chych for a protected 1st and 2 2nds?"? He'd have been told to go f--k himself and quit trolling.

Armstrong overvalued his player, no team bit, and he had to settle. That's it.

Ottawa played us like a fiddle.
Not if they miss the playoffs!!! It's high stakes but if they falter down the stretch BA comes out smelling like roses. If they sneak into the playoffs though, that won't be roses we're smelling.

Craig mentioned in his last Q&A that Merulo told BA that they needed to run lean the next few years. Prior to that, BA was under the impression he could take back, salary in a trade. That would have allowed for a better return as well as enabling other teams to be engaged. He was playing his cards right but had the rug pulled out from under him at the last minute. Add in the fact that Chychrun wanted out and BA had his leverage kicked in the nuts.

Trading for Weber which helped the cap floor and actually reduced $$$ and now looking at trading Schmaltz all appear to be in line with a cost reduction.

The return isn't that far off from what has been recently speculated. @rt was saying this week that he thought it would be 2 late firsts and a late second. I would have loved any of the glorious prospects that have been speculated on for over a year but all that speculation was on HF, not actual GM's chatting.

The return is a little underwhelming, but the real concern is the absolute refusal to spend money. I get that Meruelo is probably hemorrhaging money with a 5,000 seat venue. I hope there does come a day where they get the TED built and start spending money again. It's kind of a tough situation to be in though. You may not want to start spending money until you're bringing in fans, but you're not going to bring in fans with draft picks either, you need to ice a good product first.
That's the bigger concern; if the team is financially better off playing in ASU's arena like Gutierrez and Bettman claim, then why lock the vault? Casino owners are all grifters. It ain't gonna shock me if Meruelo turns out to be cut from the same cloth. You're a billionaire? Spend some money and reward the people that buy tickets.

You are very likely to get your wish. Those top teams are not going to waste the pain of a tank year and trade down. Especially this year where a top 10 pick could have gone top 5 last year.

Well he did just cut an unplanned $25M check for the improvements to the Mullett.

Currently the pick is 13OA which could get to 3OA if the lottery balls work but….

13OA - 90.7%
14OA - 5%
2024 unprotected- 4.3%
