If you are Dubas, what are the contracts you will sign ?

15 AAV x 8 ?
15 AAV x 5 ?

If Matthews hesitates and doesnt sign in the next 2 weeks .... then what ?

He can walk if you don't get a deal done July 1, 2023.

And there are MANY reasons he walks.
 
So many posters pontificated about him being the greatest Leaf of all time.

Shame if he leaves with a mere single playoff round under his belt.

You sign him. It's 1 mill more than Pasta. They are pretty close, AM is a bit better and the 1 mill difference will yield no difference maker.

(Pasta with the most GWs in a single season since forever, could win MVP this year if not for god mode from already imba McJesus).

But there are red flags like his wrist or lack of heart. We all saw his playoff performance.

IMO and I'm speculating here, it's his overall demeanor that worries me. He can score 60 and it's still a bit frustrating to watch because I keep thinking, what if he cared a bit more or played with some heart?

In conclusion
for $12mill, I'll be watching him smile like a moron when a fight would be an appropriate response. Hopefully not for 8 years @ 14.5.

I think some fans want to trade him because management may have a clue on if he's willing to sign an contract extension with us or not. If not it makes some sense in trading him this summer before July 1, then risking him walking next year. I not saying I know that Matthew wants to resign or not, but will get a good idea before the draft.
 
If he hasnt re-signed prior to the draft you explore a sign n trade. Ie seth jones to chicago

There is always a team that will mortgage anything and overpayfor the superstar potential and marketing vantage

Personally i think its a coin toss between him and marner to go
 
Anyone who "for sure wants Matthews to stay" needs to quote AAV and term (he's 11.6 AAV now).

I'm convinced his " I don't give a shit attitude" is a direct result of making Tavares C.
Also, I got zero evidence to support my speculation.
 
The threat of getting nothing back because he leaves as a UFA, PLUS no real playoff success PLUS he will cost a fortune if he DOES stay seems to be enough to try and trade him.

If we cannot trade him and he doesn’t want to negotiate before his NMC takes effect…ugh, that would just feel like he is ready to pack up, and that would just suck so bad.

I say this, of course, in a vacuum, taking nothing else into account. Losing Marner and Nylander AND Matthews would be a disaster.

EDIT - I do NOT want Matthews traded. He is the talent you build around, not the talent you trade. But, this being the business that it is….

I thought of that myself but at the time he was too young and immature. JT was the right choice between the two especially with his summer indiscretion.
 
Honest question to ask yourselves.

If this playoff matchup vs Florida had every single dollar Matthews has ever made on the line rather than a trip to the conference finals on the line, do you really think his stat line at the end of this series would be 0G 2A?

Don’t need to answer me. This about how much you lie to yourselves.

If the fans want him to stay he will stay, the second we trade him he would win a cup.

I would do 15M x 8 if that’s what he wants. He would set the market and that would be the going rate for a star player.

IMO I believe he wants to stay and win a cup with Toronto. The only way he leaves is if this toxic fan base runs him out of town.

It’s not supposed to be easy, they’re on the verge of breaking through and it seems most people here want to give up. Very frustrating. I’m a quiet poster who reads everyone’s opinions, but I can’t believe the attitude in here.

40yrs a fan here. From Eddie Shack, Tiger Williams, Wendel Clark, Doug Gilmour, Mats SUndin, Darcy Tucker, Shayne Corson, etc etc etc...all Legends in this town. All this fan base has ever wanted are players with determination and work ethic. This group is quickly edging towards the Phaneuf/Kessel crowd. Never have we seen the talent this team has now; if you asked most old time fans, they'd trade the core 4 for players like Tachuk, Bennett, Cousins, and Reinhart in a heartbeat!

On a positive note , his actual salary for 23/24 is 7.975 million so there are cap basement teams that would love to have him and getting him for that makes his 11.640250 in cap hit a non issue . Would he agree to go to Arizona ? what about Anaheim ? Lets be clear Austin Mathews put up 3 more goals and only 2 more total points than Zack Hyman who plays for literally half the hit this year . All the nonsense we have heard over the years about him being of equal value to Conner McJebus is nonsense so why not get the biggest haul we can for him while trimming the most of his cap we can .
PS the same can be said for JT but his value might be perceived by most teams as quite a bit lower .
 
I don't want to trade him but you have to explore options if he refuses to sign for $13 million or less. Hell I don't want to go higher than $12 million but I'm being generous. He's not worth more than McDavid but he and his agent will argue for a pay-raise. Will have to point to his lack of playoff production and success against him.
