Well they have 17 players signed and $9mm in cap space.

Huge hometown discount?

Two of these?

Florida could easily move contracts around to fit Matthews. I won’t be surprised to see him land there. No tax state.

whether leafs fans want to come to realization or not, Matthews will not be a Toronto Maple Leaf starting next season.

Did Tkachuk ever tell reporters that he wanted to stay and planned to re-sign in Calgary?
Talk is cheap.

Matthews 5 year contract says it all.

Matthews wanted 8 but at a higher cap hit and has stated it many times Dubas made his bed with the JT contract and set himself up by gift JT Mitch Marner and allowing Marner's number to be inflated in a contract year.
JT/AM make 11+ and Mitch out producing both of them was a disaster

They are all going to walk anyway. who will stop them?
If I had any inkling they will walk or they want max dollar.....then you have to trade no ifs ands or buts about it. A tall task at this juncture which would probably fracture a lot of the fan base but pretty much everything fractures the fanbase at this point so whatever. It would take a skilled person with big balls or the equivalent of big lady balls to make it happen.

Im begining to think that our core guys are all just glorified Phil Kessels except that Kessel actually did pretty good in the playoffs but more that they are not leader types you follow but rather very good even excellent complimentary pieces who need others to show the the way.

love the guy but hes gonna want a pay incrase and how he's preformed I don’t think he’s worth it

not taking the risk he walks for free either I’d move on from him . I’d try and get some value you back for sure

A Package around Hayton + Keller would be good

Anyone taking in absolutes right now either way has no idea what they are talking about

is it millenials and zoomers that think they deserve everything they want or

Generational traits are a myth. No generation has ever thought the ones after them worked hard enough, or appreciated things enough or had realistic expectations

Marner wasn't outproducing Matthews

Marner wasn't outproducing Matthews
JT's first year in TO Mitch put up 94 pts in 82 games playing with JT.
AM played less games but still had 73 pts in 68 games.
Matty signed his contract the season that he totaled 73 pts JT had 88pts and MM had 94 pts
What do you think MM would ask for after he had more pts than both players that just signed for 11+

4. When it comes to Auston Matthews, it’s waaaaaaaaaay too simple to suggest that Dubas’s departure means he’s leaving Toronto. I’ve stated my prediction several times: he will sign an extension that takes him to around age 30 or 31, leaving him one more big contract before he retires. What I think this does is shift the timeline.

One Maple Leaf indicated last week he didn’t think Matthews would sign by July 1 even if Dubas stayed, but it’s very hard to see it now under a new manager. Wednesday is 37 days from the first day he can sign an extension, and there’s so much to learn between now and then, starting with who the new manager will be and what is their plan. Therefore, Toronto will have to discuss its comfort level with allowing Matthews’ no-trade to kick-in heading into the final year of his contract.

Under the Shanahan/Dubas regime, those conversations definitely took place. There seemed to be a comfort level they could keep Matthews long-term. We will see if the new regime feels any different, especially if it is Treliving — who lived through this last season.

Generational traits aren't a myth but they're dangerous and divisive. People can't help being products of their environment. These thoughts are seeded in our heads through media as a template for divide and conquer.

Matthews would lose more money in Bet 99 and RBC endorsemts then he would save in taxes by going to Florida. All his star power would disappear. We don't see Barkov on ads do we?

Maybe he will follow Dubas to Pits. Maybe that's what ownership is thinking by hiring Dubas potentially.

Why so hyperbowl...if we trade 34 the assets we get back could be a very nice haul and maybe enough to help push us over the edge. This doom and gloom because Dubas is gone and or Matthews might leave is unwarranted imo. Sure it might be worse but it seems as though this team has peaked out and what we see is what we are going to get if it stays the same. Making the playoffs is nice but surely not the end goal. Would trading Tkachuck for Matthews last yr make our team worse to the point of tearing it down? I would argue we would have done more damage in the playoffs with a player like Tkachuk and thats not even getting into his much lower caphit and higher term.
True!
Maybe the assets we get for trading Matthews may one day be as good as, Auston Matthews.

Remember the years between Sundin - Matthews?
The days of #1 centres like Stajan, Grabovski, Moore, Bozak, Brent, Connolly, Kadri?

I'd rather not return to those days.

Or you get a combination af players assets that sets us up for more success. Eichel is really good but Buffalo looks better with the pieces they acquired. Tkachuk etc etc. I want to keep Matthews, even though Im not convinced he is the guy to take us to the promised land, however im not backing up the brinks truck and giving him whatever he wants. One series win in 7 years and a bunch of no shows when the games mattered and people want to make him the highest paid player in the league?....no thanks

It doesnt have to be either we keep 34 or we return to the dark ages. There is other scenarios that can play out that can work for us.

While I see what you're saying, the Eichel deal isn't really comparable. He had 5 years left on his deal that netted Buffalo some good pieces.

According to DailyFaceoff's Frank Seravalli:

• With Kyle Dubas gone, the chances of Auston Matthews not re-signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs has in fact, multiplied in the last few days since Kyle Dubas is gone from Toronto.

• Auston Matthews is tight with Kyle Dubas.

• Auston Matthews and the rest of his camp appreciates how Kyle Dubas conducted himself, his vision for the Toronto Maple Leafs and plans for the hockey team's future.

• Auston Matthews played his best hockey with Mitch Marner.

• Some Toronto Maple Leafs players say that Auston Matthews is a pretty private guy.
