Just send him to the Hawks for their first and future first. That way the Hawks can have Toews, Kane(sign as UFA), Jones and AM as the new core, lol.

Honestly, if that’s to happen, I think we will end up having the same conversation with Bedard in a few years.

AM didn’t produce, there is no denying that but you don’t trade a true 1C in the league like that.

If he agrees to 12.5 (Mackinnon makes 12.6) you keep him…anything more show him the door

I would even give him 13m. Big deal at that point, you need to keep him but if he doesn't want to stay or indicate that his going to stay get rid of him. What choice do you have?

Even the post game interviews just strike me as more of "well shucks that sucks" as opposed to a guy who hates to lose.
I been preaching this for a long time now

If we win, cool - we can carry on to the next round

if we lose, cool - summer starts tomorrow

He doesn't care to lose - it's right there in front of our faces every time we watch his post-game interviews - yet very few people are noticing it

Re-sign him to a reasonable deal should be the goal, but with a new coach and Marner traded as motivation to kick himself into a higher gear going forward.

If he's not willing to re-sign, or only willing to re-sign at an unreasonably high number like 13.5M, then trade him.

I recognize that we can't actually sign him until his NMC kicks in, which makes this tricky. But I would assume Dubas and Matthews agent can hammer out the details in June before he's eligible to sign on the dotted line.

Nah we wouldn’t

Bedard is in the Mcdavid tier, those player produce.

But Chicago wouldn’t do that trade

Does AM honestly deserve more money than Mathew Tkachuk? Maybe if the leafs hold onto him they ask him to sign for less for less years with a “perform in the playoffs and you’ll get the salary you want” type deal - but does Mathews do it? The irony is thag if he doesn’t it essentially gives you the answer you’re looking for

A really shrewd (and possibly quite talented if it works out) GM probably;

Offers AM that type of scenario or just straight up offers 9.5 for 8 years; if AM turns that down then trade him to Arizona or LA or Calgary

Trade Marner and Tavares for picks and roster players

Make Reilly captain. Get more guys that are gritty 40-65 point guys to fill out the roster

Get Lindholm from Calgary

Depending on whether or not AM is still around; go for more players rather than picks

Leafs defense and goaltending ended up being fine. Not sure if you need to retool that much right yet, but with the ability to trade three extremely high profile players, you can get a lot back.

Absolutely no guarantee tampa or Boston are nearly as competitive next year, Florida and isles will likely put more heat on top of the race so Atlantic is wide open for leafs to stay in the mix if not lead it

The guys that stay will learn from this experience, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they take the next step. Whether that’s a more impressive second round showing or making it at least to the ECF that remains to be seen but you’re on the right track and getting rid of guys that have questionable heart or are at the very least being paid a lot relative to their impact should do a lot of good

There is no way AM is getting less than his current contract on his next deal.
I think of AM, MM and Willie, only MM might consider getting less on his next deal mainly bc he can’t handle being the top players on the team in playoffs.

If the Leafs trade Matthews they likely lose that trade badly. Most teams won’t trade young cost controlled players, you’ll be taking back a big contract on a 60-80 point player and some picks/prospects.

Leafs Centre depth goes out the window with an aging Tavares and no Matthews.

You're assuming a trade that's meant to keep the Leafs competitive in the present. I want a complete rebuild where the Leafs get a big haul of prospects for Marner and Matthews.

Pretty good view, that is Reilly. no whistle yet.

Nylander 1C, Marner his winger.

Auston isn't re-signing.

Dubas needs re-signing first. Dubas can't pay out the future if he's not a part of the plan.

Send him to California where him and that dbag Bieber can be best buds and get matching earrings and maybe write a song together.

We should be when it's fantilli.

Rebuilding teams won't want expensive and injured Matthews.

As an outsider. I look at the fact McDavid signed his contract in Edmonton 4 days after he could.

The only question is, if Matthews wants to wait till 24 to talk new contract...do you guys wait?
There needs to be a draft day commitment deadline to staying long term.
Either telling the Leafs he is not signing long term, or not telling them equals the same answer. Trade.

You said the leafs shouldn't take an offer from Anaheim for the 2nd because we aren't in the market for picks. If Anaheim actually would make that deal than we should take it.

#1) Auston isn't signing. We probably will get some good assets for him.

#2) The current team isn't capable of a playoff run.

change is required.
I'm not sure I'd want to sign Auston long term anyway. That shot of his is already in decline. But culturally speaking, nothing changes until Marner is gone.

Problem is he has a NMC kicking in July 1st. After that he holds all the cards.

He doesn't hold all the cards. The Leafs are the only team that can sign him to an 8 year deal.

Even if he wants to leave, if he cares about money, which has been suggested, he would prefer the Leafs orchestrate a sign and trade like Matthew Tkachuk did.

He cannot sign an 8 year deal without the Leafs help.

I voted trade, despite the fact that I would like to keep him.

We won't be able to sign him for 11.9 and I just don't see how you can justify 15.
You can get a lot of production or meddling wrist problems and no playoff hockey.

Pretty good view, that is Reilly. no whistle yet.
The no-goal was bad, since they had to have had this view. ...and i thought the OT winner was a good goal until i saw the replay of Gudas with a handful of Jarn's stick ...i was wondering why he didnt try to block/stop the shot, and that was why.
Not only did Gudas grab his stick, he pulled him off the puck as a result.
NHL needs to add penalty review on goals.
