He doesn't hold all the cards. The Leafs are the only team that can sign him to an 8 year deal.

Even if he wants to leave, if he cares about money, which has been suggested, he would prefer the Leafs orchestrate a sign and trade like Matthew Tkachuk did.

He cannot sign an 8 year deal without the Leafs help.

I don't think it matters one bit to him. $2 mill difference in AVV over 7 years is a $14 mill difference and he can still earn some in his 8th year on new contract.

his injury plagued play makes long term deals more of a liability than a bonus.

If he signs I want a short deal.

I'm sure you do, not sure he would given the same circumstances.

How many UFA's sign short term deals unless they're not getting the money they want.

We don't even know if he's the same player at 32 or even able to play hockey. Players prefer security.

There's still immense value with the Leafs 8 year offer.

They can front load it like no other team can.

Depends on how his health is at 32-33.

The Leafs bonus structuring is still probably the biggest draw. Gives him the biggest ability to save on taxes

There is very little value in overpaying.

If he gets traded .... I think the return will be alot worse than expected.

why exactly was he defending ?
covering the point, when Lil moved forward, and the pass never came (again) ...only difference to what Gudas did on the winner was Gudas took the defender out of the play, and the shot got through, our shot didnt

he signed a 5 year deal.

he either wanted the chance to leave or wanted the money.
probably both.

He asked for an 8 year deal but making more than McDavid. Dubas countered with 5 years at a lower average.

People often misconstrue the past thinking the Leafs wanted 8 and Matthews wanted 5, it was the opposite.

That's not really asking.

When a contractor is busy for the season, they say they will do the work but quote you 50% over their regular quote. It's a sucker quote. But for stupid money ... their guys will work weekends. Matthews didn't really make an offer.

With the cap not scheduled to go up much you will see Matthews sign another smallish extension and try to CA$h out with his final deal.

McDavid asked for 13.5M and got it - but still signed in Edmonton for cheaper because the media portrayed him as greedy

He should have matched or held firm on full term 12million x 8 years.

The only way you win in cap era is drafting well and winning at contract negotiations. If you don't do those two things the rest is impossible. Obviously coaching and trades and all the rest matter but the foundation is drafts and contract negotiations.

If AM wants to stay for 12-12.5mil a yr, would you guys still want to trade him?

As of now, I really don’t see any signs that AM wants to leave. Ofcourse, that can change.

That’s a bit too concerning imo

He is 28, and he has had a wrist injury issue every year for the past 3 years. The question on if we can rely on his wrists to perform comes up, because otherwise we get the Matthews from this year and the playoffs
Exactly, we're in a really shit spot now tbh

Is AM34's wrist ever going to be the same? That's his primary weapon and what allows him to be an MVP-level player. If that isn't there anymore he's still great and all, but he isn't in the top tier of elite. And we'll be paying him the highest salary in the league for production he won't hit again

This doesn't even mention his playoff concerns and inability to raise his game at various key moments. The more I think about it the more I realize we're f***ed either way

Remember when many wanted to give him the captaincy? Tavares is no better. Why can't we get this straight? Rielly looks to be the obvious choice now.

This.

If he has a substantial raise in mind, hopefully it's with another team.

Was it really? He asked for money no one could offer him and then settled for 5-year deal with a lower average.

Asking for more than McDavid is begging for 5 years deal.

Yes we could probably have 8 years at league max. Great, but for me this is player wanting 5 year contract.
