Management caves and makes Matthews the highest paid player in the league or he walks for nothing. No in between, we all know the organization won't make the proactive decision.

For those saying he needs a power forward winger to play with… Auston, is supposed to be the power forward.

Matthews staying in Toronto is not an option here. He holds all the cards and it is going to go down the same way that Matthew Tkachuk and Johnny Gaudreau did to Calgary last summer. Matthews is going to tell Toronto the exact same thing they did, I am American, and I want to go home. I am not resigning in Toronto.

Los Angeles is the target.

I think we can keep Matthews and Nylander but Marner and Tavares need to go. Use the 22M from those two to harden the edges of this team.

If Matthews doesn’t want to resign, then trade him at the draft before his NMC kicks in.

If he's asking for the moon, trade him ASAP. Send a message to the rest of the team.

AM 34 is going nowhere unless he flat out refuses to sign an extension with the Leafs.
Love it or hate it, he IS the face of the team and our franchise player. If he wants to stay, management will move heaven and earth to accomodate him.

Trade him for picks in the next few drafts and blow up the core in general. Next year start tanking for Celebrini. Keep Marner around as a father figure for the young guys.

The odds that the Leafs figure out their GM situation, fully negotiate with Matthews, and work out a trade deal all by the draft when multiple teams are still playing seems unlikely.

Byfield is garbage, do none of you watch hockey outside of Leaf games ?
He's struggled but where are you going to get a better potential C. Could try vilardi but think he's mainly played wing. Need a C coming back if you deal Matthews cause we don't even have a 2025 first. I think LA just really sucks at developing forwards. They've had so many not hit anywhere near their potential. He's not my first choice. If you could get Cooley + from Arizona then do that. Maybe even hayton with a lot of pluses

If your going to target a young center then target someone like McTavish. Byfield, vilardi, hayton are all terrible options.

He has a NMC kicking in July 1st. If you can’t get a read on his intentions by then you shop him at the draft to see what kind of lucrative package you can get. Problem is teams will want to know if he’ll re-sign there

In all likelihood though you can’t trade him until after July 1st, where he can select his destination and have his extension signed right after.

He needs to come with a very modest price for me to consider re-signing.

If they push the Hart and Rockets narrative you counter with his body of work in the postseason. That’s when it really matters.

McTavish a bad option wtf lmao. Man literally went 0.5ppg in his first season as a 19/20 year old on an awful Anaheim team.

And hayton isn't even that bad. Mark my words the guy will become at least a solid 2c, he already performed at a 2c level last year. Arizona just f***ed around with his development a bunch. When they finally let him play with Keller last year he produced close to a ppg the 2nd half of the season.

Look at what eichel fetched. You're not gunna be getting guaranteed 1c guys.

Whatever happens I doubt it's going to be ideal for the Leafs. Matthews, warts and all, IS a true #1 center, IS one of the best goal scorers in the league and IS a very good two-way player. These types of players don't grow on trees and are very hard to replace. Ultimately, the Leafs are a flawed group offensively. Just not a lot of depth there and Dubas (or whoever replaces him) is extremely limited on how to address it.

He's going to walk as a UFA anyways, so you have to trade him. We've mortgaged our future way too much already for these bums.
Whether he is or isn’t that’s the first consideration.

From there we can play GM and determine if he SHOULD stay or not.

I’m uncertain at the moment, necessary information notwithstanding.

Marner on the other hand…I don’t know. Getting a #2 or 3 pick could set us up down the middle for another generation.

Matthews and Fantilli and ROR down the middle…

Try reading a little closer, Mc Tavish is who I said to target.
Yeah I see that now. But I don't see the ducks trading for Matthews. Why would they, they got a solid foundation being built. Trading for Matthews would basically be like the leafs signing Tavares. Extremely short sighted and likely a bad move in the long run.

0 points on 5 games, will be asking for the biggest contract in NHL history, and will walk for nothing if we don’t give it to him (NMC kicks in July 1).

Give that some honest thought.

Is Byfield really that bad. If the Leafs do decide to trade Matthew, LA is the team I think would try and acquire him, Byfield, Clarke, Vilardi, + are the three main pieces that leaf could get in a trade with LA.
