Sundin was at least a respectable leader and carried his team deep into the playoffs.
McDavid will win a cup once he gets out of Edmonton.
What the hell has Matthews done in the playoffs to get compared to those two? He's had a much better supporting cast than Sundin did. This team didn't win shit with him at $12m, and they won't if they re-sign him either.

Sundins PPG is in line with Matthews in the playoffs...do we get banners for winning a handful of rounds now? let me remind you the media here eviserated Sundin for not being a good leader so cut the shit with the revisionist crap. Sundin was great but he didn't win anything.
McDavid playoff resume includes a handful of bad sweeps...he also does not have a cup, maybe he'll win 1 if he ever leaves Edmonton (why would you think he won't resign?)
So why will McDavid win if he leaves but Matthews won't? you're prognostications have no basis in reality.

Sundin took on Jonas Hoglund and an aging Alex Mogilny.
Matthews has Marner, Tavares, Nylander, etc.
The fact you don't know the difference tells me you were even born probably 2005 or later.

Depends on if his wrist is permanently screwed. You could see that it was wrapped in the handshake line. After that surgery his shot may never be the same. You can't give him his ask if that's the case. He's more like a 9 million dollar player than a 15 million dollar player if he can't snipe.
Mcdavid has put ridiculous numbers the last two playoffs, Matthews is clearly not on the same level.

Sundin is a warrior that put the Leafs on his shoulders for YEARS esp in the playoffs. The difference between Sundin and AM, Sundin is more clutch and if the Sundin Leafs were as talented as this current Leafs, Sundin might had brought home a Cup or two.
AM just needs to be more clutch. He played well tonight but just couldn’t score. If he potted 1 of those chances, the Leafs win.

Sorry man but there's just no way. He isn't a franchise player. He isn't captain material - at all. Like I said I get this "boy in a grown man's body" feeling with him. Check out some of his interviews outside of hockey especially. Maybe it's just me but his conversations and choice of words/phrases seem juvenile and on a teenage level in comparison to other superstars in the league.
A big, strong, talented guy who looks like he hasn't hit maturity yet to take full advantage of it. And it's getting a little late. 27 years old for the upcoming season. Still hard to believe. Lots of media personalities were saying he was on the list to take a shot at some serious all-time NHL records but after this season it's looking like he might lack the effort and desire to even try it. Like I said hockey isn't everything right. He might very well share that philosophy and it's a shame

Sundin would excel even more in today's NHL...he played in the clutching and grabbing era, where opponents would literally hug and mug him to slow him down...the man was a true leader and a horse.

Tavares is immovable. Firstly, no one has the balls to try and trade him. Secondly, he is 2-3 million overpaid at the least.
Holl and kerfoot gone gives you 5.5, that gets you one top 4 dman, if you want to bring back Schenn that’s even less. Rielly is a #1, McCabe looks like a #4/5, Liljegren same. Brodie looks cooked, gio is old as f***. So you have to find 2 top 4 dman or another Justin holl
Woll can be given the reigns, but that is 40ish games. You can’t play him 60 games all of a sudden, he played 9 this season. So you need a tandem goalie for him
And yet again, all of this could happen, but we go no-f***ing-where if Matthews continues to no show like he tends to in the playoffs.

He was bad this series. I can understand the frustration with Matthews but if you trade him you're taking too big of a piece out of a contending team. It's not like taking out a Marner who I do agree should be gone this offseason.
A franchise #1 center is almost impossible to find so they will have to continue finding wingers that click for him.

It's been 6 or 7 years now and this guy has disappeared every playoffs and delivered nothing to the team and its fans in return for their never ending support of him

If the Leafs trade Matthews they likely lose that trade badly. Most teams won’t trade young cost controlled players, you’ll be taking back a big contract on a 60-80 point player and some picks/prospects.

2-3 mil overpaid? Tavares looks like a 2-3 mil player. Not a 8-9 mil player.
It all depends on whether he wants to sign an extension, and the kind of money he wants to resign. With the 0 goal in the 2nd round, he doesn't deserve a contract that matches MacKinnon. He may have tried his best but played relatively well but get stymied by Bobrovsky, but that excuse is much more digestible for a 8 mil cap hit than a 11 to 13 mil cap hit.
If Matthews willing to sign a 6 year extension at 0 salary increase.
