My preference is to have him remain with the team. I really wouldn't want to see the club take a step back when they finally took that step forward (even if one is of the opinion that it wasn't quite enough).
What step forward? 1 playoff round win in 7 years? (And they got extremely lucky they didn’t lose that playoff round)

Yeah.......... Matthews certainly lit the lamp in that Florida series didn’t he???

You don't trade a generational 1C and expect your team to be better.
Unfortunately we don’t have that

We have a number 1 Center who this year was a top 10ish Center and had a 2 year peak of being a top 3 Center.

Maybe that’s just it, maybe Matthews is actually a 90-95 point player who had a career year

So your statement doesn’t apply

The Naki
Trade him

He's going to demand a massive amount of money he doesn't deserve on his next deal and he's always going to be a passive soft easily bullied no show when things get tough

You are trolling. :)

There is ZERO chance he takes lower or even the same. He will point to his trophies and say he wants a top 5 contracts in the League going forward.

Marner will get jealous and say, "I have more points than Matthews, so I want similar money".

It's gonna be a mess.
Leafs are screwed regardless, but I hate seeing incompetence being rewarded, time for new incompetence to give them a chance

Nope this fanbase is used to mediocrity so they worship the likes of matthews and marner
lol...it'll be the same the next guy will get chased out too. why would free agents wanna sign here when we Larry Murphy everyone.

Probably best to not have a star centre on this team

What would you do?

Run it back with the core yet again? Sign bunting to whatever he wants? How do you bring back Schenn, acciari, and oreilly? Who replaces holl?
no you make the right moves and trade pieces that are easier to move; you absolutely do not get rid of your 1c. If all the shit you idiots are typing about him is the perception then how the hell do you think he's going to get a good return. You're going to lose that trade and then all of a sudden your team is garbage and you're out and about looking for a 1C.

People here love talking about how you build from the net to the D through Center and that wingers are easier to replace but also at the same time want to run a back to back rocket winning centre out. what is wrong with people here? the guy went 8 straight games in the playoffs with a point and scored critical goals in round 1. He got snakebit in round 2 and is obviously in need of wrist surgery.

what is your realistic change? lets get rid of Matthews, Marner and co. because they suck but somehow get amazing returns that we can stay competitive in the hardest division in hockey? You good with missing the playoffs for another decade?

There's just something a little aloof about Matthews, like nothing about this game really matters to him. "Life isn't all about hockey" is the feeling he gives off - and can we blame him? It's true. But a true winner doesn't think that way unfortunately. He's entering his late 20s soon yet he seems to come off like a teenager in interviews, especially interviews outside of hockey.

Another thing that shocked me ---

He'll be 27 at the start of the upcoming season. Wow. The same age as when Tavares signed here- and when JT signed here, some of us were saying that while 27 is still young, it's close to the end of most player's primes, and now they move on to the next stage of their careers which usually isn't quite as fruit-bearing as their first 7 or 8 years. In other words, the decline (slowly) begins.

Matthews - 27 for next season? Believe it or not, this guy's prime might already be behind him. If not, he's getting there. At the very least he's at his pinnacle. Hard to believe but it's a fact.

6 or 7 playoffs with no action from him. That's more than enough of a sample size now- he is what he is. Enough is enough. We don't need 10 years to figure it out.

I still think this team makes the playoff with my trade proposal, most likely in the wild card spot. The team will be better over time.
lmao no they wouldn't have you seen the division around you? Boston, Tampa, Florida, Buffalo, Ottawa all will be in the race to make the playoffs then you have to deal with NJ, Carolina, NYR, Pittsburgh so pray tell how do you make the playoffs?; this team won't have a 1C so it won't be in that race. Byfield is garbage, and the rest is meh. prospects and picks and vilardi.

Byfield + Pizza Man (Danault) + 1st
Why does LA do that?

As opposed to now, when they're... stuck in the doldrums of the league?

Your first point is correct, just not for the reasons you think

What would those right moves be?

Nylander? Marner? Tavares? Rielly? Kerfoot? Brodie?

Matthews got snakebit? That’s seems to happen a f*** ton of times. Columbus, Montreal, now florida. Why does it seem to happen so often to a “generational” player.

As for the surgery thing, it’s very concerning that he’s needed another surgery. Are you willing to pay 12-13 million for that type of guy

Fair or not, people have given their opinions on what the team should do. All you’ve done is shot on them and have given a bland as f*** answer as to what you’d do

move Marner? because like everyone used to say during the kessel years wingers aren't as important...

since I think he's a good player you could likely build a package around him for Kyle Connor or something and come out better for it when you have two goal scoring threats on the same line with Matthews and Connor

Move Tavares? he's past his prime

let go of holl and kerfoot rebuild defense around Reilly (who this whole board hated for half the season). Keep Reilly, Liljegren, McCabe

give the reigns to woll

you keep making stupid posts never say who you'd replace these players with that you are calling garbage. if they are garbage how will you get good players for them? Are you willing to tear it down and end up like the Sabres or flyers? how do you plan to get a 1C?

I agree 100%. It's an NBA mentality. He'd rather be off shooting TV commercials and hanging out with Bieber at UFC events. It's why this team is perfect for him. He doesn't even have to bother with the playoffs and still gets worshipped by half the fan base.

We don't need 10 years, and we really shouldn't have needed 7 when some of us had it figured out after 4.

And what did the rebuild and this dazzling 1C accomplish? Oh right, a single victory in the 2nd rd. LMAO keep making excuses for this shit team
still didn't answer how you get a 1C? what did Sundin accomplish? no cups? what did McDavid accomplish? no cups? doesn't mean they weren't 1Cs that are integral to winning and building a good team.
