Im looking at this from the point of view of the competition the Leafs face in the eastern conference, what would worry me more?

The Leafs signing Matthews to a long term extension as one of the top 3 paid players in the NHL (taking up that cap room) and basically having him lead the core of this team but with less cap space?

-OR-

The leafs trading him, getting multiple assets in return, maybe picks/prospects that they can use in other trades to bolster the back end, and possibly having more cap space while doing it.

If I'm another top eastern conference team, I just might be more worried about the 2nd one.

100% trade him. I've said ever since he bent Dubas over in negotiations last round, he's out the door as soon as that contract is up. He's essentially the leader of the new Muskoka 5, call them the Bieber 4.

I would've traded him sooner when he had more value with a contract. Now he's only a rental, and they'll get rental prices.

The main thing that sucks is that I don't wanna see him go his entire career without playing with a big legit power forward on his wing, which is something we needed to get for him his entire career here.

Both he and Marner will want a BIG RAISE - that I promise you.
I wouldn't wanna be the sucker handing out those contracts. They couldn't lead a team to shit at $12m. Imagine how they can handicap their future teams with a bigger cap hit

Matthews will want to be in the Top 5 in contracts (in the League) and Marner will want to be close to Matthews. It's gonna be a mess.

Tavares at his worst is still putting up close to PPG.

Karlsson at his worst is a 40 point defensive liability.

I'll stick with the devil we know
Well said.

Trade Marner in a package for Brady Tkachuk.

Imagine a line of:

Nylander - Matthews - Tkachuk
Ottawa would laugh in our faces with that offer.

"We'll give you a dynamic $11m/year playmaker who disappears in the playoffs for your gritty captain who's one of the best young power forwards in the game who signed at $8.2m until 2027-28"

Let's be real here for a second

You don't trade a generational 1C and expect your team to be better.
You are trolling. :)

So that’s an easy trade
Current deal or even less
He has to look at these playoffs and not take it personally if the offer is even lower
There is ZERO chance he takes lower or even the same. He will point to his trophies and say he wants a top 5 contracts in the League going forward.

Marner will get jealous and say, "I have more points than Matthews, so I want similar money".

It's gonna be a mess.

I mean can anyone name one Stanley Cup winner in the last one or two decades that made such a trade? Serious question. That being said, if it doesn't look like that they can get a contract done before trade deadline can't let him walk without assets but those who wants him out before training camps are nuts.
