I’m not opposed to re-signing Matthews if he agrees to take a pay cut. In any just society, extending him for more money than McDavid would be punishable by a lifetime sentence to a hospital for the criminally insane.

My preference is to have him remain with the team. I really wouldn't want to see the club take a step back when they finally took that step forward (even if one is of the opinion that it wasn't quite enough).

I voted trade, but it has to be understood we will not get full value for him. At least not in the short term. I am still down to move on. Doubt the returns offered are satisfactory. If only ARZ won the draft lottery... that might have been the one.

As much as I'm pissed at Matthews
He's a top line center... You keep that.
You trade wingers that don't compete....they easier to find.

If matthews wants less than 15 mill i take him.

Otherwise we cant keep him.

We need to change something. If someone offers a boatload, you should consider it. I would look at moving Matthews last of all the big 4 but if he wants to take more cap away from an already depth barren lineup, what can you do?

Only so much you can do when the same players have been giving out poor results.

Issue becomes what he will command and what he is. He's not the guy and has shown he isn't. He also is continuously injured with his wrist being the main point of issue. This is multiple years of wrist injuries which have limited his best weapon, his wrist shot.

Yet, he will be asking for 14-15 million come July 1st

He's the one I'd keep and move Marner, but there's a bad situation here with his contract

Keep him. If he wants too much you let him walk as a UFA and use that money on a REAL defense core and forward depth.

Carter verhaeghe is making $4,166,667m avg. I'd rather 3 verhaeghe's than one invisible $12m #1C.

Maybe if he takes a serious discount.

Laugh him out of the room if he tries that 15+M bullshit.

You're getting a couple less million than Mackinnon cause that's what you are bud.

I use to be very concerned about Matthews leaving. Now I'm indifferent. If he doesn't get some huge raise I'm OK with him staying, but if he wants too much money or wants leave I don't mind either as long as the Leafs don't let him walk for nothing and can get a good package for him.

It really boils down to his ask.

If he stays for a reasonable price . If his ask is 13+ or even 12.5+ I think you have to consider moving on.

Whether you like Dubas or not, he does have a good relationship with him and he had better get an answer this werk what his intentions are.

Matthews sucks the way Stamkos sucks in the playoffs. Surely you can win building a special core around him and lift him up but he’s not going to step up and take you anywhere. He’s not Mackinnon or Draisaitl. He’s never going to be that.

Whoever is the GM has to find out how much he wants for an extension this summer. If he isn't willing to sign it this summer then you shop him before his NMC kicks in.

Keep, unless someone gives us an offer we can't refuse

If he refuses to re-sign, trade him
He 1000% is going to refuse to re-sign. Take it to the bank, he is outta here. He is going to force a trade.

On the eve of the Leafs getting eliminated the results of the poll will likely lean toward getting rid of him, someone needs to take the blame, right? BUT, with me its not a reaction. I'm not going to say just the team needs a new direction, but the FANBASE needs a new direction, and that starts with Matthews.

What can you get for him? probalby not a single player back who is just as good, but you SHOULD be able to get one or two legit very good players, hopefully open up some more cap space, and get prospects and/or picks which you can hold on to OR use in a deal to get another player for this team.

Do that with Matthews and do something similar with Marner, and you get a team with less star power next year but one that HONESTLY might be a better TEAM.

Start with the useless captain.

If he is serious about staying i would give him his 14m. I don't think he wants to stay.
