You are trolling. :)

There is ZERO chance he takes lower or even the same. He will point to his trophies and say he wants top 5 contracts in the League at the time of signing.

Marner will get jealous and say, "I have even more points than Matthews, so I want similar money".

It's gonna be a mess.
There’s lots that the leafs can also point to
To justify a lower AVV

Hes not even close to the top dogs
Oilers are losing but on the backs of their stars

Playoffs makes you a star

Just trade this mess

Matthews sucks the way Stamkos sucks in the playoffs. Surely you can win building a special core around him and lift him up but he’s not going to step up and take you anywhere. He’s not Mackinnon or Draisaitl. He’s never going to be that.
He’s a bus rider, not a bus driver. He will never be that go to guy for a team. I don’t see that extra gear with him. If this was basketball, he would be an elite #2 or even an elite luxury #3 option on a legitimate contending team. If matthews is your best player you will never win. But his ceiling as a player is : an elite luxury supporting cast top 6 player who exploits mismatches and weaker opposing matchups and lets superior offensive talents handle the toughest minutes and face the toughest matchups/opposing players.

I'm saying no but in big part because making a deal of that magnitude by July 1st makes it awfully difficult. And then consider if MLSE brings in a new GM and that cuts that time even shorter.

If the Leafs don't offer him a sizable raise, someone else will and he'll be gone like the morning mist.

That's why you trade him.

Keep but only if he's willing to sign a reasonable extension.
He won't. There are endless teams who will be willing to offer him more money.

Matthews will play his butt off next year knowing a team will offer him north of $13M/yr. He will not sign (with the Leafs or elsewhere) for less than $13M/yr.

Unless the Leafs are willing to go there, trade him.

The thing with AM is that, will he sign the new contract before July 1? Or wait till next year.

If he is willing to sign and the price is reasonable, like 12mil and not more than Mack or McD. Then I don’t see why we shouldn’t sign him. I know he didn’t score in the last five games but that might work to our benefit of resigning him.
If he refuse to sign before July 1, trade him and get the max package. Look at the Tkachuk trade as a ref in what to get.

To me if any of the cores need to be move, JT is the one. He has to know that he failed as the Capt and Leafs these past few seasons. If he is as honorable as he claimed to be, take the high road and leave the team and help Leafs get a great return package.

He is way better than Marner.

I want to see him with a real power forward.
And a coach that can set him up at a point shot play like , Pasta, ovechkin, And many other players who can slap it.

Fire Keefe and see how he looks with better players.

6 years with the guy. 7 even. Very mid when it comes to playoffs

Wouldn’t mind a new look either for good return

Tampa wins in 4 if you remove Matthews.

Early poll results is consoling this loss for me. You guys don't deserve it anyways, so who cares if we lost.

Gets tiring hearing he doesn't show up in the playoffs or floats around too. He's one of the best top scoring centers defensively and he had a 12 game point streak in the playoffs until he hurt his hand early in game 3 and was scoreless since. I don't think that's a coincidence and he also wasn't close to 100% all season anyway for those who have watched him in his career.

A fully healthy Matthews is something I will take my chances on over whatever crappy return we would get in a trade.

Matthews on a team surrounded by players that play winning hockey and can let him be his inconsistent self just might possibly work.

Problem is that team is immediately nuked by his cap hit

I think you're probably right about this. I'm still pissed as all f*** about his no showing but nobody's gonna have a return worth while.

They won't.

What team would take that contract? Answer : No one.
He is still a PPG C and a big name. I think Flames will trade for him since they are already in the all in mode.
Kraken if they get eliminated as they probably want a 1C.

JT is no Phil or Dion who were close to untradeable due to the medias and a bad season.

AM didn’t show up in Game 4 but he did tonight, he just couldn’t score.

If he wants to stay, you keep him without a second thought.

He’s not getting 14-15m. He’s not the best player in the NHL, not even close, so why would he command that money?
40 goals in his latest season

a no-show in all playoff appearances

...is somehow is deserving of 15m/season?

lol

He's gonna want a raise and a long term deal. He will ask for a minimum of $13M/yr.

He has a NMC that kicks in July 1st which makes this entire thing very complicated.

I think you have to go to him very soon and offer him a contract.

If he says no, which he most likely will, then you have to move him because losing a player of his abilities for nothing is absolutely devastating for any franchise.

If he reachs free agency, I doubt he resign's with us.

Even with just 1 year left on his contract you would still get a massive haul from say a team like the Kings.

exactly the way it needs to play out.

If he is committed to this city, then he'll sign a deal here soon as he can.

If he doesn't want to sign before July 1, then he is basically giving us his answer.

if he doesn't sign before July 1 then he isn't signing here ever.

He has to be moved in this case.

Which won't be the end of the world. Personally I can take him or leave him, there's something missing with the guy, whether it be maturity or desire or what not.

Get everything we can for him and ship him out of he won't sign now

If he is willing to re-sign at his current cap hit and since we won't, trade him and start the rebuild.

Also in this scenario, Marner has already been traded (pre July 1st).
