Why? And isn't the official record 50 in 39? 50 in 50 is just a cool milestone to reach.

50 in 50 is not only cool milestone with round numbers but also linked to history when the regular season schedule was exactly 50 games and Maurice Richard was the first one to score 50 goals a season. Richard didn't have the luxury of calling in sick for a game and ending up scoring 50 goals in 51 team games but 50 personal games. That's why the official record is what it is. 50 in 50 is still very remarkable in any stretch, it just isn't exactly the same as from the team's game 1 on.

Another thing is whether records from almost 80 years ago should still be referred to and celebrated, as it is with records from the 1920s which are hardly even mentioned nowadays. If we continue like that, will Gretzky's records be totally obsolete in 20-30 years?
