Why does it matter if he scores 50 in 50 when he gets outscored by 2 of his own teammates in the playoffs, including a defenseman? Great player but he needs to start showing up in the playoffs. No one cares about what he does against columbus in december.

It's not a bad idea to enjoy a guy on your favourite team doing crazy shit when only one team is going to win the cup.

And you say no one cares........well...........

They maybe shouldn't, yet they do.

You gotta roll with the flow.

This is why Matthews makes the most money in the league. He keeps hockey exciting in December for Leafs fans. Worth every penny . After all this hard work he deserves a little golf in April.
He has more goals then the Senators team has points in the standings. You guys mind as well had been golfing in November lol but always appreciate the snark about other teams from bottom feeders.

There's no such thing as golf in November in most of Canada. Canucks fans for sure? I wouldn't know.

Merry Christmas btw to everyone in this forum.

Massive love to all.

A lot of people care about a guy with the potential to be the first 50 in 50 in thirty years or whatever it is.

The ultimate goal is the Stanley Cup, yes, but it's not like the stadiums are empty and nobody watches the regular season.

Gretzky's legacy is built on his regular season performances, though yes of course his playoff success adds a lot to his lefacy.

Most of the records people talk about don't involve the playoffs, and his 50 in 39 is hockey legend. Do you think when Gretzky did that people asked "Who cares what happens against Philadelphia in December?"

Guys like you will always exist to tear down people who achieve great things for whatever reason they can find, but a lot of people are going to care if Matthews gets close to 50 in 50.

Statistically, I think it's incredibly hard to score in the NHL and he likely will come up short, but he has the best shot of it of anyone in the league, and I'd be excited for him to do it even if I weren't a Leafs fan.

I don't think he's going to be the best goal socer ever but I couldn't help but notice you didn't completely brush off that notion

He's on a solid goals per game pace. If he can maintain it a few years and relatively stay healthy I can't see why he couldn't get a top 5 goal position.

Just needs some more 60s and maintain high level play.

A lot can go wrong though and not sniff even top 10.

I give it a 5% chance

lmao

"Best scorer ever" he can try and be behind Ovy but he's not better. Young Ovy would murder this league

26 year old Matthews isn't behind 26 year old Ovechkin in anything except time elapsed on the powerplay.

I'd like to seem him do it, but he wont.

I'll happily eat a fistful of crow though if he does

Why would you say he won't so assuredly when he has already scored 51 goals in a 50 game span before?

He just scored 51 goals in a 50 game span 2 seasons ago. Then everyone pretended there was such a huge difference between that and from the beginning of the season. I argued pretty strongly that there was not, and if he pulls it off this year I think we can safely say that it comes down to the player doing it far more so than the period of games it happened.

I guess he might still have a chance at the best goal scorer ever title but he'll have to string together a few Rockets and probably 60 goal seasons to be in the discussion (in addition to the longevity stats). A third Rocket before turning 27 would be vital as goal scorers have historically tended to have peaked by then. Just a single 50 goal season thus far looks really weak comparatively, but should he get 60+ this season that'd fix it up considerably as there's not a single player with two or more 60 goal seasons who didn't play in the 1980s.

Really strong season in terms of goals for him thus far. Just wondering how he's so atrocious as a playmaker.

28 in 30. He missed a game out with the flu.

You can see the trolls who voted he was not a top 50 player in the league in that poll. Looks good on them.

Right now this season is #1. Just like he was in the 21’-22’ season when he won the Rocket, Hart and Ted Lindsay.
I don't know I think Kucherov has been just as impressive IMO. I think it's close

he had a stretch of 9 games where he scored once as well.

Besides that, he has been on one of the biggest goal-scoring tears in the history of hockey. Even with that, hes still on one of the biggest heaters to start a season.

Just bonkers, and this is coming from an admitted leaf-hater.

The unfortunate (or funny) thing is, he could probably score 70 but if he doesn't do more come playoff time he will get clowned on. This guy is easily the best goal scorer since Ovi

I was told Jack Hughes was already better

Every up and coming player is better than Matthews. Not more than 2 weeks ago we heard how Pettersson was a favourite for the Art Ross - and Matthews could never score enough assists to win it (which may be true at this point) - but now Matthews has as many goals as Pettersson has assists in 4 less games…

I hope Ottawa has a team half as good as Sens fans claim it will be every summer, so that maybe, just maybe they'll enjoy their team enough that they don't have to resort to trolling Leaf fans 24/7 to get any joy out of hockey.

a handful of Ottawa fans were creaming in the Stutzle v Matthews thread when Stutlzle had a few more points than him early on this season...now Matthews has almost as many goals a little Timmy has points and suddenly I don't see that thread get bumped every day anymore.(I like Stu a lot btw).

As for Gretzky's record race, he just passed Ovechkin in the race to the day and should easily increase his lead through 2025. In a more offensive and protective league, it's not crazy to think he can score 895 goals in his career.

It's hard to pass when the puck is already in the net... his playmaking is fine though.

Also... he'd have 2 more 50 goal seasons without COVID, I don't know if it is fair to hold it against him, but I guess all that matters is hitting the number...

I think without Covid and if he wasn't injured for the entire season last year, you're looking at another 40+ goals...

Matthews' pace right now is insane, it is the longevity that will be hard to replicate from Ovi.
