Remember last year when some Leaf fans accused McDavid and Draisaitl of being more concerned with personal stats than winning when they were running away with the scoring race.
Strange, you don’t hear that this year.

Anyways, Matthews is having an amazing year this year. It’s crazy the rate that he’s scoring at. One of the best goal scoring seasons we’ve seen for quite a while now.

Type 1 - 50 goals in team's first 50 games
  • Maurice Richard (1945)
  • Mike Bossy (1981)
  • Wayne Gretzky (1982, 1984, 1985)
  • Mario Lemieux (1989)
  • Brett Hull (1991, 1992)
Type 2 - 50 goals in player's first 50 games
  • Jari Kurri (1985)
  • Mario Lemieux (1993, 1996)
  • Alexander Mogilny (1993)
  • Cam Neely (1994)
Type 3 - 50 goals in 50 team games (not from start of season)
  • Phil Esposito (1971)
  • Charlie Simmer (1981)
  • Jari Kurri (1986)
  • Bernie Nicholls (1989)
  • Brett Hull (1990)
  • Teemu Selanne (1993)
Type 4 - 50 goals in 50 individual games (not from start of season)
  • Mario Lemieux (1988)
  • Auston Matthews (2022)
"Fifty goals in fifty games" has been done 21 times by 13 players in NHL history. The first category (fifty goals in the team's first five games) is the only category officially recognized by the NHL.

Technically there would be a fifth category, for players who scored 50 goals over 50 games across multiple seasons. Most of the players listed above have done this, and it would also include Howie Morenz, Bobby Hull, and a few others.

Although it's "only" in the less impressive 4th category, what Matthews achieved in 2022 is probably in the lowest scoring environment out of everyone.

I don't know I think Kucherov has been just as impressive IMO. I think it's close

The really impressive stat:

Kucherov has almost as many power play points as Matthews has goals.

Matthews has almost 1 goal per game.

Of course, your team needs to be on the power play for you to record power play points, a thing the Leafs have barely broken their virginity of.

Not sure this makes much sense at all?

He has more goals then the Senators team has points in the standings. You guys mind as well had been golfing in November lol but always appreciate the snark about other teams from bottom feeders.
Did you just accuse me of being a Sens fan? That's low.

So your sole qualification for being considered a top 10 player is that player has to be in the top 10 in points?

no, Defensemen and Goaltenders exist too

which is why it's extra laughable to claim a Forward is when they can' t even crack the top 10 in that

Well obviously.

Everyone knows that Alex Kovalev was a far, far, far superior player to Bergeron.

Just compare their offensive stat totals per year.

f***ing obliterated Bergy.
Bergeron and Matthews should not be mentioned in the same sentence in terms of defense. An elite multi Selke winning center vs an above average defensive center.
Next!

I have been waiting for someone to start this thread. If he hits 50 in 50 but on his teams 51st game it will be so disappointing.

He's a very special goal scorer. Kind of like Ovy in a way, where it makes it hard to rank him vs. his peers, because SO much of his value is in his ability to score goals. But, you know, goal-scoring is an incredibly valuable thing.

This is a really great era for talent.

The funny thing is, Matthews wasn’t mentioned in the same sentence or at all in the post you were quoting.

But angry leaf troll yells at clouds….

not even inside the top 10 in the league in points again this year after the rest of last nights games
Not sure if you know this but Goals are way more valuable than assists. Using A1 as being .55 of a goal and A2 being .19 of a goal Matthews has been the best scorer in the league this year. About 7% better than Kuckerov and 38% better than McDavid. Any stat that values a second assist the same as a Goal is extremely flawed.
