The thing about Zub is he's gonna get better as he becomes more acclimated in the NHL.

The guy was running the top of the point even with Chabot on the ice with a minute down and was doing an exemplary job. Most of our 2-3 minute pressure was due to his decision making and poise.

Signing him 6x6 would be well warranted. Anything less than that would be gravy.

Are we watching the same Zub here?

A complement is a guy like Methot, Zub on the other hand is one of the best defenseman to have thrown on a Senators jersey in the last 15 years.

Someone could easily pay him 6 and he'd be worth it.
That’s a little over the top. He is a nice player and currently our 2nd best D but it’s a low bar. You can definitely pay him 6M but is an overpay. I see him like Jake Muzzin with less offence. Muzzin has an AAV of 5.6.

No way...Muzzin sucks

I don’t think it’s viable to pay your number 3 D 6M when he doesn’t produce much offence.

He's the defacto #2 due to being by far the best right hander we have in the system and his offence is severely underrated. This dude has elite level awareness (like a Pinto of D-men) and offence will come to a player like this, especially when we've seen him being able to pass well out of the zone, pass well in zone and has a crafty shot too.

In 2024/25 we will be paying Sanderson 8+ unless he sucks. Zub’s next contract will start in 2023/24.

This is something to caution everyone on wanting expensive vets like OEL etc. Spend the money internally from here on - even though we need a top 4 D-man pretty bad right now. Unless the contract is short, run away from it.

We all knew it would add up quickly.

Now it looks something like

Tkachuk 8.2
Norris 7 (projected)
Batherson 6
Pinto 6 (projected)
Chabot 8
Sanderson 8 (projected)
Zub 6 (projected)
Goaltender 5 (projected)
Paul 4 (projected)
Brown 5 (projected)
Stutzle 8 (projected)

~ 71.2 for 11, need 10 players.

Shed: Zaitsev for third pairing, save 2 million.
Shed MDZ period
Shed Tierney, save 2 million

The rest have to be made up of ELCs or the Ennis' of the world.

EDIT: I'm low on Paul and Brown. I know I am, I'm just sort of spitballing on their contracts.

Sadly he will clearly be signing his FA contract with the NYR.

8M won’t be getting you a top 10 D.
I specified top-10 from a salary perspective, which is absolutely accurate today:

1. Karlsson, 11.5M cap
2. Doughty, 11M cap
3. Josi, 9.059M cap
4. Makar, 9M cap
5. Subban, 9M cap
6. Hamilton, 9M cap
7. Pietrangelo, 8.8M cap
8. Heiskanen, 8.45M cap
9. OEL, 8.25M cap
T-10. Burns, Trouba, Chabot, Carlson. 8M cap

All data from CapFriendly. Subban will be coming off this list after this season, surely, and we can probably expect one or two others to get on this list by 2024/25. But my point still stands.

You forgot Werenski, Jones, Nurse all at 9+ also Morgan Reilly and Adam Fox coming up this summer. The new bar has been set for RFA extensions for D with high end potential and it isn’t going to come down.

Fair point, I'll concede the top-10 argument... but not the overall point. It's $8M defender or suck? No in between?
