I would pay him 6 mil just due to the stability he has given--and will continue to give--Chabot. Invaluable.

Realistically 5 mil on a 4 year deal but whatever, we seen how hard getting someone of Zub's calibre has been and will be.

5 million is cheap when you look at what Ceci was making and what Zaitsev makes.... This guy is the real deal.
I hope we can get him for 5.

Gonna cost way more than that in both dollars and term to keep him. The team absolutely has to do it too. Can't afford to lose him on any level.

6 million x 8 years or 7 million x 6 years is likely what it's going to take. I'd happily sign him for 6 x 8.

You could make a case for Zub being our best player so far this year.

I was at the game yesterday and was with some more casual fans and one passionate Habs fan and they were all raving about Zub. I think last night he, Chabot, Batherson and Norris were easily our best players. I'm a guy who appreciates overall quality play over flash so Zub is right in my alley. He's easily our 2nd best defensemen, and hands down best defensively. His offensive skills are there and he's extremely calm under pressure. I think he's also our 2nd best offensive defensemen. Just the way he sees the ice and manages the play there's no one close other than Chabot. This is a guy who could be in any top 4 in the league and it's not a fluke. If he keeps expanding on his offense and keep his solid defensive play I think he's a lower end top pairing guy.

I also think he's been one of our best players this year, if not the best. He's certainly been the steadiest player providing the same effort and quality of play every shift.

He's a machine.

What's annoying is that a lot of us were yelling for a long term deal. I get that the agent didn't want that, but you work on it instead of signing him day 1 for 2 years.

Now...it's gonna be real expensive.

Exactly .. very hasty. Only thing that makes sense to me , is if that was precisely agreed to before he signed here to begin with.
Still you'd think there might be a little persuading going on. Everything is negotiable. If Dorion could not evaluate Zub after one year of watching him play .. and we look at who he is bringing in to prop up our D when we are trying to develop young players .. Hard to admire.

It's quite surprising that they wouldn't have taken the time to sit down and say, look, we love this player, we want him here for 5+ years, what can we do?

Maybe there's a quiet agreement that if his trajectory continues, he'll agree to a 6 year, 30 million deal (as an EXAMPLE) this upcoming off-season. I don't really know.

Sometimes I think Dorion was right to build this, but to finish it and win a Cup, we might have to look elsewhere. I hope not though, because aside from the shitty handling of the Stone situation, I've liked what he's done in this burn to the ground rebuild.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the short term deal was what Zub wanted. From his perspective, it must be very difficult to come to Canada, barely speak English, and have to live in isolation for his first pro season. I probably wouldn’t want a long term deal either until I knew North America was the right fit for me. Obviously Russian players can just leave if they really don’t like it, but I’m sure this was just a way to test the waters. Hopefully we can get some more Russians on the team to keep this as a place he wants to be long term.

Ask him what players in the KHL he thought were the best. Sign them and Bob's your uncle!

Not sure how that's relevant when none of the rd in this organization will ever be as good as Zub is right now. At some point he will come to this realization along with everyone else from being forced to watch the games.

Of course he wanted the short term deal.... But it was to walk him to unrestricted free agency. He knows that's how he makes the most money. He knows he is good.

The reality is that most long term deals turn out in favour of the player and are bad for the team.

Yeah, if you're signing a guy at 28 to an 8 year package, but a young guy like this? We could have gone long IMO. But hey, as long as we sign him next off season, I don't care.

I think he said the shorter term gives us flexibility if others are ready, not that they will be.

it was stronger than that and I think he expects one or both to be ready. I also think he underestimated how good Zub is. Those guys being ready is one thing. Being able to replace Zub is an entirely different thing. He signed him for 2 for whatever reason and he pumped the prospects which he does whenever he can. I take that part with a grain of salt. He should make every effort re-up Zub this off season. I think he should start looking at him like a core player going forward and treat him with that kind of priority to extend.

Will cost no future dollars since he is likely not gonna be here after next year lots of players need to be resigned and Zub is gonna try and cash out , such is life I’m gonna enjoy him for the rest of this year and the next than worry about losing him after that

Zub is a cult hero in Ottawa - if he ever wanted to be a legend somewhere this is his chance

He left Russia. He isn't looking to be around more Russians!
