Zub the real deal. He's everything we hoped to have in a partner for Zub.

Bringing in another legit top 4 guy to play with Sanderson and our defense next year is our biggest strength.

You guys are funny... This time last year guys were screaming about our D. I kept raising my hand and asking what about this guy Zub? He's played world junior, worl championships, Olympics and TSN says he could be an instant top 4. Now he's the second coming of Christ.

Next up. Lassi Thomson. We spent a year screaming about bad pick, coulda had this guy, coulda had that guy. Next year I hope you're all chanting his name

His Russian agent will say "If you pay, he stay"

Exactly. He wanted the two year deal to get paid ASAP.

Retaining him is going to be very expensive, he's definitely going to be one of the best UFAs available when his current contract is up.

Now that they have found a partner for Chabot in Zub, they need to find a parnter for Sanderson & they have a few options. Zaitsev has the most experience, JBD knows him best having played with him at UND & Thomson seems to be the next RD in line to join the team soon.

My guess is they start with Zaitsev, but the long term plan could be that one of Thomson or JBD actually run with it when they get their opportunity. In the end my money is on JBD, their association with UND & how good I think JBD can be should eventually win out.

The 3rd pairing IMO begins with Kleven on LD & maybe Thomson on RD, that could be a good combo, but so could JBD here. The only thing that worries me here is the lack of size & toughness on this defence & on the PK. Maybe Kleven handles the size & toughness part & the other guys play well enough defensively & add enough offence to make it work.

Chabot - Zub
Sanderson - JBD
Kleven - Thomson/Zaitsev

They signed Zub like a minute after the exit meetings. He had oodles of time .. if he wanted to negotiate a longer deal. The problem with Kevin is he makes no sense

Zub wanted to go to Russia and not to worry about a contract to see his family and his wife wanted to see her doctor back home, being pregnant and all and due to Covid. They are from the same city far east, China is on the other side of the river.
I believe her sister is also married to a hockey player. The management still had no idea what Zub was as a player. I mean being on the second best team in hockey in the Olympics. It is like a soccer manger of a big club like Manchester City would not know a top defender for team Germany.
It would be an absolute idiocy, but that's what Senators management is. That's why Dorion just whatever, two years, walking to a free agency with peanuts costing to us - no problem. He said it after, we have better pieces in the system))) Zub will be poached from us and given 7 million for 8 years, mark my words. By the way, the whole board here was so happy, we got Zub cheap and people as Dorion completely misjudged our farm system. Sanderson would be awesome if he will be close to Zub. JBD can not replace Zub. And we will be stuck again with two d-men, who can play. I just hope Dorion will concentrate NOW on extending Zub. We have no choice but to pay him big bucks.

That's interesting. I'm probably more high on Sanderson than anyone on this board, as I think he will be our best overall player.

But if Sanderson only becomes Zub? I would not be disappointed at all.

Which just emphasizes that there is no way we can let Zub go.

A lot of players show promise in the first year and then fades away after getting a big contract, so I understand if Dorion wants to see more before committing to Zub even if Zub is open to long term deal. I don't think Zub should get more than 6 based on lack of offensive numbers. Ideally he should get 5.5+ but if he keeps up his play, he'll command 6.5, maybe even 7+ from some teams. I hope Dorion can convince him to sign 6 for 5 or 6 years, given we are trending up and he likes the team and the city.

No one liked our d core going in last year. No one was against the idea of giving him a shot.

What I meant by that was virtually no one on the board flagged him to be much of anything. After he was in for 5 games guys warmed up to him quickly

I really don’t know why the org just doesn’t hire you. You are clearly on a level above anyone else

Not gonna lie, I’m intrigued by Tompson over another Zub. If we can add a top 4 quality guy who is fiesty and has an NHL level bomb of a shot from the point, that would fill a hole.

I don't think I'd rank in the top 50 of guys on this site that are on here telling the team what they should do.

But I appreciate the sarcasm nonetheless.

Letting Zaitsev walk will free up some $ for a Zub extension.
That ship has sailed. The time to give Zub longer term was last summer. But it didn't seem the front office cared to do this as much as they cared to do it for Tkachuk.

Zub's gone in two years. Dorion, prove me wrong!

Yep, unfortunate Dorion didn't throw him and extra 1-1.5M per year and tried hard to convince him to give us an additional 2-3 years. I get the small sample size risk and all that, but the risk to reward ratio is totally worth taking that gamble even if he regressed a little from last years play, he still wouldn't have been much of an overpayment. Could be that Zub absolutely didn't want to sign longer than 2 years, but an extra mil or 2 can change anyone's mind. Such a lost opportunity, he will cost a considerably more to lock up now, north of 5mil at minimum when he's due.

Exactly. Sure it's a small sample size, but using your own eyes on your own player during an abbreviated season can't be worse that trusting your pro scouting on players on other teams that we keep bringing and who keep busting. Similarly, DeMelo and Duclair were players who we had and who could have stayed but that we let go. and that we replaced with inferior and sometimes more expensive players.
