What would be considered an overpay for Zub, 6.5/7 million? I know I was very vocal agaisnt the Brady overpay. But how can we hope to replace what Zub brings? for the 25 minutes he is on the ice bad things just dont seem to happen. He stabilizes not just the D core but the entire team.

In the last 10 years we have barely had a top 4 d, and now that we finally have two top pair talents and a defence that can be built towards being the best, do we jeopardize that by allowing him to walk?

Chabot
Zub
Sanderson

can be championship level.

Zub's offensive numbers will likely never warrant a $6M+ payday.

I'd say the comparable at the top end would be Ryan Pulock (8x$6.15M) and at the bottom end, Jamie Oleksiak (5x$4.6M).

So I'd offer him 6x$5.25M tomorrow.

Try if he want 4.8 - 5.2 m first . If not I probably go 6.5 m for 4 or 5 max

yes but if it comes to an overpay? do we risk losing him and all the stability he brings?

I think if they keep him on the top pair and continue giving him PP time he could end up having similar production and impact to Ekholm in Nashville. He doesn't have the name recognition yet but their quality of play is similar.

For a comparable…

Marc Methot signed a 4 year deal @ $4.9 per, 4 months out from his 30th birthday. This was 6.86% of the cap.

When his contract expires Zub will be 4 months out from his 28th birthday. Assuming a small rise in the salary cap an equivalent deal for Zub would be an AAv of $5.5-5.7m. You could go longer on the term (6 years) though because you are getting him younger, this saving some AAv. Maybe split the difference on the years - so something like 5 x 5 would be good value for the team.

That’s assuming in 2 years that he is seen in the same light as Methot was circa 2014/15.

Pelech and Pulock just got paid and they don't score a ton. He is going to get 6 million minimum and it will be worth it.
Zub is 26. Not that young.
That's young.... Good d men play well into their 30's.

6 x 8 is what it's gonna take and it's well worth it.

Is that 6 years at 8 or 8 years at 6?

Pulock & Pelech signed pretty inexpensive deals... 6.15m & 5.75m. Pulock had a bit of a down year offensively, but he hit 30+ points the previous 2 years. I'd be happy paying Zub in that range but imo both guys took discounts.

It depends on what the salary was. if they were offering only 2.5 why would Zub agree to that?

Would have been interesting to know what they would have said to a 4/4 or a 3/4.

wow what an assist on the Norris goal. As well as the send to Formenton.

Someone mentioned that he was the best passer on the Senators and I have to agree. So smart and is able to open up so much space with the deftest of passes. his pass percentage must be the best on the team by far.

If he gets regular powerplay time I can see him hit the 35-40 points mark.

I wish they had signed him to a long term deal (captain obvious). Especially if they were going to pair him with Chabot. Could have had a steal. If he plays two seasons with Chabby he will be a rich man. Not sure we'll be able to afford him.
