I say he's a solid #3 who has the potential to be for Chabot what Methot was for EK, a calming presence who does all the little things right.

Zub doesn't do any one thing spectacularly, but he is above average in every aspect of the game. He has a lot of strength for someone who's not overly small, skates fine and fast, great stick work, great positioning and knows how to make break out passes and carry the puck without treating it like a grenade.

I'm sure the fact that the rest of D being crap skews how I view him, but I hope we keep him long term, he's been a godsend.

I know he’s probably not available but it’s looking like the Sens won’t make the playoffs this year and perhaps even next year. Was wondering if there was a price you guys would be willing to move Zub at? Is it likely he sticks around when his contract is up?

Sens biggest priority after extended Stutzle this offseason is extending Zub to longterm contract. Even ahead of Norris. Yes, I said it.

Zub is instrumental to our RD and looks like he has another gear left in his play.
Unfortunately I think that ship sailed when the 2-yr contract was signed.

Zub is not going anywhere for now. Maybe next trade deadline if he's a pending UFA.

Will the Sens keep him, who knows? He may want to move on or the Sens dopey GM may have a plan...

SNAPSHOTS: Ottawa Senators GM Pierre Dorion doesn't waste any time by signing Artem Zub to a two-year deal | Ottawa Sun

"Dorion said he talked about multiple scenarios with Zub’s agent. The club wanted to go two years with Zub because they want to make room for Jacob Bernard-Docker and Lassi Thomson plus the Senators have No. 5 pick Jake Sanderson coming out of the University of North Dakota after next season."

If you keep good players, they'll block your prospects, whereas if you get Stepan and Del Zotto they won't block anyone! Genius.

How many 4th rounders are you willing to part with?

Absolutely not. We are on the upswing. He will be guaranteed Chabot or Sanderson for years to come. He likes it here.

He signed a 2 year so that he can sign for more, it was a normal 2 year deal, unlike what Stone signed.

What we need to do is sign another top 4 D so Zub also has stability with one partner and in his own role.

You should ask Dorion. That'll be the cheapest price you get around here.

The logic makes zero sense.

While Thomson and JBD are solid prospects, neither project to be top-end, big money players, and both are looking at bridge deals for their next contracts and are likely 3-4 years away from cashing in, if their development continues.

Realistically, we aren't going to be paying either guy over $3M per season until at least 2025/26. So we could have easily signed Zub for 4-5 years.

And if JBD and Thomson both hit in that span? That's great. It's okay to have good players on your 3rd pairing, especially when they're young and cheap.

If by next trade deadline he hasn’t been extended and the Sens aren’t making the playoffs he’ll go to the highest bidder. A top pairing Dman with a 2.5 million cap hit. He’ll likely get a 1st +.

We need him. Dorion has not been able to bring in D that can play in the top 4, Zub can . Bird in the hand.

Well if Sanderson is as advertised, he could command 8+ after his ELC. That means with Chabot and Sanderson at 16 mil, we will likely have to spend 1 million tops on all 5 remaining defencemen.

I’m only half kidding. Seriously though if this team let’s the one good dman they have acquired since Methot go they are truly a lost cause.

The whole Zub thing is probably another budget matter.

I can imagine Dorion thinking instead of paying Zub, The kids can play and I'll allocate the money to sign Norris, Stutzle etc. The Sens futile effort to try and win games with a $65 million payroll can continue on.

Zub not being signed to a long-term deal last year was probably mainly due to Dorion wanting to avoid another Zaitsev situation. The Leafs went all in on Zaitsev after one season and although he is an ok NHL defenseman, he is definitely overpaid. Zub however took his game to another level this season, which is both good and bad for us, but it is what it is. It would have been risky to go long-term but obviously in hindsight it would have been the right thing to do.

Montreal fans are still in chock after getting rid of Sergachev for basically a French name on a jersey. Zub is right there with him and with a different coach could get 40-50 points a season. Zub as I understand is overwhelmed with defensive responsibilities, having basically an AHL partner all the time to think about offence. But he is a two-way defensemen and very creative offensively. You could see it with Chabot and top line. He is solely instrumental at a cycling game during his shifts. It is fun to watch him and Stutzle creating that cycling magic. With DJ we do not see more of it. Because he tells Zub to pull back and watch for breakouts.

Sign him, even if you have to trade Zaitsev with a pick to make room for the salary do it - like you say he’s here and he’s 1/3 of our RD that we can check off the rebuild box for the next 5 years, fans would love it too

Dorion is genuinely stupid enough to not resign Zub and keep Zaitsev…
He'll have his coach in his ear telling him how great Zaitsev is as well. I believe this was a big factor in him not discussing a Demelo extension and moving him as quick as he could.
