In 2024 the contract that Bobby Holik signed with the Rangers (5x9m) more than twenty years ago would still be seen as asinine. That blows my mind.

While this is a testament to how much NHL ownership has won the revenue battle, part of that is that UFA contracts were artificially high because there were comparatively fewer UFAs. In practice now, a player of Holik's caliber never signs a 5 year contract - he always signs for 7 or 8 years. A Holik caliber player signing for 7 years/$8M isn't unheard of, but yeah it took until 2019 to get there.

Because I’m pedantic and fascinated by pre-cap spending, I always like to jump in here and point out that top stars’ took up a ridiculous part of teams’ payrolls before the salary cap.

TOP 2002-03 NHL SALARIES

An extreme example is
Kariya 10m is ~26% of Anaheim’s 38m

But yes, Holik’s, uh, generous salary still stands out on that list, but that’s the magic of unlimited cable money.

The Rangers were at 69.2m in 2002-03. (They had #4 Bure, #7 Leech and #8 Holik on this list.)
The Salary Cap started at 39m in 2005-06 and didn’t get to 69m until 2014-15.

Uh oh, the Ducks are angry now.

I'm guessing it's some kind of riff on the logo from their 30th anniversary jersey.

It’s a re-branding, so maybe it’s long term?

The Ducks have, by far, the worst logo in the NHL, so god knows they could use a change.

They deservedly won “Worst Logo” on the Poll Board recently. (We won best logo so the poll board is obviously dead on with this particular topic.)

The Kings logo/jerseys suck too, compared to every other one they had, but the description of the new one doesn’t exactly excite me. (I actually like 1990s-2000 purple ones a lot, but that’s me.)

i always found it funny that every year, the rangers would buy the best available players only to flame out and go nowhere. then comes the salary cap, and they're perennial contenders. it's like the rangers were too stupid to figure out you can't build an all-star team and expect success, so the league stepped in.

Let’s check in on Alex Meruelo’s continuing efforts to get that arena in Arizona.

Well oiled machine.

Good luck with that.

Meruelo has zero intention of developing this area. He'll get "outbid" and release some BS statement of how he tried his best.

And then take his $1B payout from the NHL to the bank, laughing.

We should sign him if they buy him out. Guy is a real winner.

He's exactly what this team needs.
For like a million? Sure. Whatever.

But signing those kinds of guys at massively inflated deals because he "knows how to win" and is a "playoff performer" are where big mistakes are made.

My post was basically a mockery at someone (who appears to change names all the time) who said a couple of years ago that he was who we needed. And cited things like grit and toughness, winning, etc.

He's probably fine for a million though.
