I guess I have a hard time seeing how any uniparty member with the media apparatus behind them, don't also sound completely confident.

I certainly agree though, that Cherry and Trump sound overly confident, come off bombastic (my words), etc. I used to hate it whenever Ron MacLean brought up Dale Hawerchuk, Cherry would quickly pivot to mentioning Doug Gilmour.

And for the record, I think Wheeler did a great job when we take into account his entire tenure, and what he meant for the franchise.
Again, fair enough. More than anything I want to move away from the "us vs them" mentality. It's being leaned on hard on both sides because it appeals to our basic instincts. It's effective but I just wish we could move past it.

Sorry to the mods for the politics.

I agree with your earlier post and this. I'm a moderate in American politics and I've been told my whole life I'm evil from one side of the line or the other side. It is tiring. Life is not a binary function. Politics is not a binary function.

But when it comes to Blake Wheeler :p I'll die on that hill every day. That dude plays the game the right way. I wish I could afford to go the Peg to watch some games. I'd alternate between my #55 and my #26 with the C on it.

Wheeler did a lot of good community work too. I think he’s still loved by a lot of the city and the casuals. It’s just brainiacs on HF, terminally online Redditors, and Twitter morons who think he was an expired bowl of Corn Flakes for the most part.

That's awesome. I wish the majority of people would take the same initiative.

I appreciate your perspective and feedback.

Sorry to the mods here as well.

Well Columbus doesn't have to trade him. They can hang on to him and sell him at the deadline in a couple of seasons to sell him at the standard 1st + 2nd + Prospect price. So if Carolina would want him now for 3 runs instead of 1 and have Columbus retain 20% so that he is closer to his true impact at around $7 million then they have to sweeten the deal somehow.
Was it reported anywhere that the Canes were interested in Laine? He seems to be unnecessary baggage for a contender to take on.

Well he did score!

never saw that ever at any level of hockey, guy actually was about to celebrate the goal, the level of clueless was inconceivable!
I was going to say ... surely it's happened before, and I thought I'd seen it elsewhere.

Half an hour later after watching tons of NHL "own goal" clips on YouTube ... nope, Sip is right. Can't find any other clip like that where a player snipes an own goal and starts celebrating before realizing "oh crap, what have I done?" All the other ones I found were delayed penalty empty netters, pucks bouncing off skates, or guys trying to clear a puck out of the crease an hitting it wrong.

That said, I understand the frustration over polarization. I've been down on Laine for a long time ... doesn't mean I don't think his first few seasons with us weren't magical. I will always remember that one hat trick of his where the third goal, he flipped the puck over a falling defender and buried it. He was a special player for sure, but a combination of getting annihilated by McCabe, along with way too much Fortnite and not enough off-season training did him in I think. It makes me sad because if you combined Wheeler's commitment with Laine's raw talent he could have been one of the GOATs.

Totally agree, Laine was very, very good for his first 2 seasons but it's very good that we traded him when we did.

Nurse for Laine straight up?
I watched some highlights from the last couple years after seeing how awful Nurse has been this year... and yeah, he is Tyler Myers... at 9.5m forever. Maybe as a third pairing and PP specialist, he'd get his bearings back but he's going to be ruined in Edmonton

How do you turn around and tell Bouchard he's only worth 7-8?

Nurse has always been overvalued imo. He's a solid second pairing puck rushing dmen. He'd be good value with a steady defensive dmen on the second pairing making $6 million a year. But he's out of his depth trying to be a number 1 while making elite dmen money.

I guess they want to see if Aho and him can get chemistry going again. They need more offense but he doesn't really fit their teams template.

If you live in the Atlanta area, there are now direct flights to Winnipeg (possibly affordable?) and plenty of low cost tickets available for Jets games on the secondary market. Lots of room in the arena to stretch out now!

I think the vast majority of Jets fans respected and loved what Wheeler brought to the team. I was at the Rangers game on Oct. 30th and he got a very loud and long ovation. I wouldn't go by what some grumpy people online say, and even they are probably basing things on his last couple of seasons moreso than his entire tenure. Recency bias

That's fair enough. As somebody in the sciences uncertainty is a part of everything I do. In my experience the more confident somebody is the less they know about what they're talking about. Anybody who says "this is what I believe and anybody else is wrong" is an idiot and is ignoring all nuance. Doesn't matter what side it's coming from.

Cherry and Trump are all about confidence. What they say is correct because they know and you don't. I don't trust anybody that speaks with that level of confidence. It's not about being right or realistic, it's about convincing people they know what they're talking about.

Nobody in the sciences will give you a straight answer about anything. They'll give you their best based on what they know. That's science. Only the Sith deal in absolutes.
You nailed it. That is the reason a con man/game was original called a confidence man/game. Gaslighting is also a powerful tool used by people trying to promote extreme views and opinions.

We're closing in on eight years since those two weeks of wonder with Aho and Puljujärvi.

I don't think you can look at Laine as a salvageable star player at this point. The offensive talent that once did a lot of damage isn't enough anymore. The league has become too fast for the guy, and he has fallen so far behind the rest of the competition in many aspects. Also, he has made his money at this point. There's nothing there anymore.

We did well to get lottery luck.... I mean, draft elite talent in 2016. Columbus, on the other hand, needed to pay a professional in 2022. Jesus f***, did they mess that one up.

People see things in black and white now more than they have in decades. Or the same amount do and it's more accepted. Psychology shows that the average person will believe the person who says the wrong thing confidently more than the person who says the right thing with uncertainty. The most interesting part there being that uncertainty should always be a part of any belief. It's why Cherry was popular, because he said a million wrong things confidently and when the dust settled him and his fans would only bring up the one thing he was actually correct about. It's why Trump is popular as well.

I've said it to you before, but if somebody says "this is the way it is and if you don't believe it you're wrong", then they can get f***ed. Wheeler was an important part of this franchise, to you and me, if somebody didn't like him, that's fine. If that same somebody faults somebody else for liking him, f*** em.
Regardless of what is factually accurate, anyone in the world can spend 15 minutes and go find 3 fine-enough looking sources to support their baseless claims. This is about to get exponentially worse with multi-modal generative models.

We're dangerously close to the advent of a post-truth society. He who hangs the most banners will have the upper hand in any argument. Fear the Predators.

Apparently all the goalies are refusing to wave their NTC for Edmonton. I really can't blame them.
There's no way Rittich has a NTC haha

The Edmonton lineup is fkd - I think you have to trade Draisatl to open up salary and get instant depth...
