Yea they kept buying tickets didn’t they. Edmonton has a population advantage on us that continues to widen.

In 2000 Edmonton had a population like Winnipeg has today at about 900,000. Over the past quarter century they have had nice steady growth, by 2010 they were at 1.137 million, 2015 it was 1.292, then 2020 1.461, in 2024 their population is approximately 1.568 million.

Not sure how Edmonton does it? It’s not an attractive city but I guess it’s in a thriving province.

Winnipeg’s growth projections I’ve seen are pretty modest.
The city of Edmonton is 50% bigger but the biggest differenece in the markets is outside the CMAs. The population of rural Alberta is somewhere in the 1.8M range and a massive proportion of rural AB is as prosperous as East St. Paul. Housing and incomes in north east, central and northwest rural AB is basically the same as Edmonton proper. They are in a different stratosphere in terms of the number of fans and their fans ability to spend.

The Flames have a decent following in the south but the Oilers are the Leafs West, in terms of cult following, which was created by the Gretzky era and will continue for the next 25+ years thanks to all the kids born after 2010 that are growing up watching Connor McDavid.

As the New York Rangers met with the media Tuesday morning, Wheeler didn’t use the word retirement when asked if he’s thought about what comes next, but he also wasn’t ready to declare he was coming back again either.

“I was so just focused on getting healthy and with everything that was going on with the team and trying to win, that’s been the focus,” Wheeler said in New York. “Now, I’ll just, sort of, re-evaluate and go from there.”

Do you want to play again next season?

“I don’t know,” said Wheeler.

I wonder if he does retire, whether he'd sign a 1 day contract with the Jets. While his leadership might have caused a rift here, he did do quite a lot while here.

Now that Edmonton is in the finals, I still can't cheer for them. Never, ever will. Anyone around my age (61) likely has the same/similiar sentiments because of the 80's and 1990... My one good memory is being at the final Aavco Cup game in 1979 when we steamrolled the Oilers to win the championship in the last WHA game. I think the score was something like 7-3 for the good guys. I hate Kachook with a passion, but I still want Florida to win - it would be nice for Maurice.

didn't realize how good the Oilers PK has been. 3 GA in 18gp. in contrast, the Jets gave up 6 GA in their 5-game series.

Really? Sportsnet won't shut up about 28 straight kills or however many it is at this point.
